We investigate the impact velocity beyond which the ejection of smaller droplets from the main droplet (splashing) occurs for droplets of different liquids impacting different smooth surfaces. We examine its dependence on the surface wetting properties and droplet surface tension. We show that the splashing velocity is independent of the wetting properties of the surface but increases roughly linearly with increasing surface tension of the liquid. A preexisting splashing model and simplification are considered that predict the splashing velocity by incorporating the air viscosity. Both the splashing model and simplification give a good prediction of the splashing velocity for each surface and liquid, demonstrating the robustness of the splashing model. We also show that the splashing model can also predict the splashing velocity of blood, a shear-thinning fluid.
In liquid spray applications, the sprays are often created by the formation and destabilization of a liquid sheet or jet. The disadvantage of such atomization processes is that the breakup is often highly irregular, causing a broad distribution of droplet sizes. As these sizes are controlled by the ligament corrugation and size, a monodisperse spray should consist of ligaments that are both smooth and of equal size. A straightforward way of creating smooth and equally sized ligaments is by droplet impact on a mesh. In this work we show that this approach does however not produce monodisperse droplets, but instead the droplet size distribution is very broad, with a large number of small satellite drops. We demonstrate that the fragmentation is controlled by a jet instability, where initial perturbations caused by the injection process result in long-wavelength disturbances that determine the final ligament breakup. During destabilization the crests of these disturbances are connected by thin ligaments which are the leading cause of the large number of small droplets. A secondary coalescence process, due to small relative velocities between droplets, partly masks this effect by reducing the amount of small droplets. Of the many parameters in this system, we describe the effect of varying the mesh size, mesh rigidity, impact velocity, wetting properties, keeping the liquid properties the same by focusing on water droplets only. We further perform Lattice Boltzmann modeling of the impact process that reproduces key features seen in the experimental data.
When a droplet impacts a fabric mesh at a sufficiently high impact velocity, it not only spreads over the fabric but also penetrates its pores. To determine the influence of this liquid penetration of the fabric on droplet spreading on thin fabric meshes, we measured the droplet spreading ratio on fabric with and without an underlying substrate using a high-speed camera. For fabrics without a substrate, the droplet spreading ratio is reduced as the fabric penetration by the liquid reduces the droplet volume spreading on top of the fabric. Using entropic lattice Boltzmann simulations, we find that the lower droplet spreading ratio on fabrics, both with and without a substrate, is due to an increase in viscous losses inside the droplet during spreading. Comparing droplet impact of blood with its Newtonian counterpart, we show that for spreading on fabrics, just like on smooth surfaces, blood can be approximated as a Newtonian fluid.
We investigate which property of non-Newtonian fluids determines the deceleration of a high-speed impacting object. Using high-speed camera footage, we measure the velocity decrease of a high-speed spherical object impacting a typical Newtonian fluid (water) as a reference and compare it with a shear thickening fluid (cornstarch) and a shear thinning viscoelastic fluid (a weakly cross-linked polymer gel). Three models describing the kinetic energy loss of the object are considered: fluid inertia, shear thickening and viscoelasticity. By fitting the three models to the experimental data, we conclude that the viscoelastic model works best for both the cornstarch and the polymer gel. Since the cornstarch is also viscoelastic, we conclude that the ability to stop objects of these complex fluids is given by their viscoelasticity rather than shear thickening or shear thinning.
The spreading of liquid droplets impacting a surface at high speed is well understood by now. However, when a droplet impacts a surface at relatively low impact velocities (<1 m/s), the wetting properties of the fluid become important, and the entrapped air layer between the impacting drop and the solid surface prevents the immediate wetting of the surface. To determine the influence of both wetting and the entrapped air, we perform experiments by systematically varying the surface tension of the liquid and the air pressure. Drop impact measurements at reduced air pressures show that the spreading is independent of the pressure; dynamic contact-angle measurements indicate that this happens because the air film breaks rapidly. By varying the surface tension and surface wettability, we show that droplet spreading at low velocities can be predicted from the wetting properties of the surface and the known energy balance for the impact.
