PALAVRAS-CHAVE: espaço mental; mescla; figura-fundo; orações subordinadas substantivas; editoriais jornalísticos.ABSTRACT: This article critically analyzes a corpus of 20 newspaper editorials published at the onset of the Iraq war in major Brazilian newspapers. Its objective is to understand how language use relates to the formation of public opinion. To do it, we quantitatively identify a prototypical construction in the corpus and then qualitatively analyze its effects at the discourse level. Results show that copulas in cleft constructions trigger blended spaces where opinions act as truths, thus forming public opinion.
