Children’s readiness to use technology supports the idea of children using mobile applications for dietary assessment. Our goal was to determine if children 3–10 years could successfully use the mobile food record (mFR) to capture a usable image pair or pairs. Children in Sample 1 were tasked to use the mFR to capture an image pair of one eating occasion while attending summer camp. For Sample 2, children were tasked to record all eating occasions for two consecutive days at two time periods that were two to four weeks apart. Trained analysts evaluated images. In Sample 1, 90% (57/63) captured one usable image pair. All children (63/63) returned the mFR undamaged. Sixty-two children reported: The mFR was easy to use (89%); willingness to use the mFR again (87%); and the fiducial marker easy to manage (94%). Children in Sample 2 used the mFR at least one day at Time 1 (59/63, 94%); Time 2 (49/63, 78%); and at both times (47/63, 75%). This latter group captured 6.21 ± 4.65 and 5.65 ± 3.26 mean (±SD) image pairs for Time 1 and Time 2, respectively. Results support the potential for children to independently record dietary intakes using the mFR.
BackgroundAccurately assessing the diets of children and adolescents can be problematic. Use of technologies, such as mobile apps designed to capture food and beverages consumed at eating occasions with images taken using device-embedded cameras, may address many of the barriers to gathering accurate dietary intake data from adolescents.ObjectiveThe objectives of this study were to assess the willingness of adolescents to take images of food and beverages at their eating occasions using a novel mobile food record (mFR) and to evaluate the usability of the user confirmation component of the mFR app, referred to as the “review process.”MethodsMixed methods combining quantitative and qualitative protocols were used in this study. Adolescents (11-15-year olds) attending a summer camp were recruited to participate in the study. First, the participants were asked to take images of foods and beverages consumed as meals and snacks for 2 consecutive days using the mFR app running on an iPhone and the number of images taken was noted. This was followed by focus group sessions to evaluate usability, which was analyzed by content and themes. After using the mFR, a think-aloud method was used to evaluate the usability of the mFR method for reviewing system-identified foods (ie, the review process). A usability questionnaire was administered at the end of all activities.ResultsThe mFR was accepted by the majority of the 24 boys and 17 girls (n=41) but varied according to gender and eating occasion. Girls were significantly more likely than boys to capture images of their eating occasions (Fisher exact test, P=.03). Participants were more likely to take images of their breakfasts (90%, 36/40) and lunches (90%, 72/80) and least likely to capture afternoon and evening snacks, 54% (43/80) and 40% (32/80), respectively. The major themes from the focus groups with regard to using the mFR were games, rewards, and the need to know more about why they were using the app. Results of the usability questionnaire indicated that including a game component would be important to increase willingness to use the mFR, and a high majority of the participants indicated a willingness to use the mFR for 7 days or more. The image review process was found to be easy to use except for some confusion with overlapping markers on the screen.ConclusionsThe adolescents’ experiences with and feedback about the mFR highlighted the importance of increased training, reminders, entertainment (eg, games), and training with practice in using the device to capture complete dietary intake as part of their active lifestyles.
Aims/hypothesis Variants in CREBRF (rs12513649 and rs373863828) have been strongly associated with increased BMI and decreased risk of type 2 diabetes in Polynesian populations; the A allele at rs373863828 is common in Polynesians but rare in most other global populations. The aim of the present study was to assess the association of CREBRF variants with obesity and diabetes in Pacific Islander (largely Marianas and Micronesian) populations from Guam and Saipan. Methods CREBRF rs12513649 and rs373863828 were genotyped in 2022 participants in a community-based cross-sectional study designed to identify determinants of diabetes and end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Associations were analysed with adjustment for age, sex, ESRD and the first four genetic principal components from a genome-wide association study (to account for population stratification); a genomic control procedure was used to account for residual stratification. Results The G allele at rs12513649 had an overall frequency of 7.7%, which varied from 2.2% to 20.7% across different Marianas and Micronesian populations; overall frequency of the A allele at rs373863828 was 4.2% (range: 1.1-5.4%). The G allele at rs12513649 was associated with higher BMI (β = 1.55 kg/m 2 per copy; p = 0.0026) as was the A allele at rs373863828 (β = 1.48 kg/m 2 , p = 0.033). The same alleles were associated with lower risk of diabetes (OR per copy: 0.63 [p = 0.0063] and 0.49 [p = 0.0022], respectively). Meta-analyses combining the current results with previous results in Polynesians showed a strong association between the A allele at rs373863828 and BMI (β = 1.38 kg/m 2 ; p = 2.5 × 10 −29 ) and diabetes (OR 0.65, p = 1.5 × 10 −13 ). Conclusions/interpretation These results confirm the associations of CREBRF variants with higher BMI and lower risk of diabetes and, importantly, they suggest that these variants contribute to the risk of obesity and diabetes in Oceanic populations.
This study is part of the Children’s Healthy Living program in U.S. Affiliated Pacific region. The objectives were to estimate overweight and obesity (OWOB) prevalence and identify possible related risk factors among ethnic groups in Guam. In 2013, 865 children (2–8 years) were recruited via community-based sampling from select communities in Guam. Children’s demographic and health behavior information; dietary intake; and anthropometric measurements were collected. Logistic regression, odds ratio, t-tests, and chi-square tests were used to determine differences and assess covariates of OWOB. The results indicate that 58% of children were living below the poverty level, 80% were receiving food assistance, and 51% experienced food insecurity. The majority of children surveyed did not meet recommendations for: sleep duration (59.6%), sedentary screen-time (83.11%), or fruit (58.7%) and vegetable (99.1%) intake, and consumed sugar sweetened beverages (SSB) (73.7%). OWOB affected 27.4% of children. Children affected by OWOB in this study were statistically more likely (p = 0.042) to suffer from sleep disturbances (p = 0.042) and consume marginally higher amounts (p value = 0.07) of SSB compared to children with healthy weight. Among Other Micronesians, children from families who considered themselves ‘integrated’ into the culture were 2.05 (CI 0.81–5.20) times more likely to be affected by OWOB. In conclusion, the OWOB prevalence among 2–8-year-olds in Guam was 27.4%; and compared with healthy weight children, children with OWOB were more likely to have educated caregivers and consume more SSBs. Results provide a basis for health promotion and obesity prevention guidance for children in Guam.
Culturally relevant programs among indigenous populations have had positive dietary outcomes, yet less is known about cultural immersion. This study examined the influence of cultural immersion on willingness to try fruits and vegetables (FV) among children 3‐12 y in Guam. A pre‐post, quasi‐experimental design was used to evaluate 3 summer camps with different exposure levels of cultural immersion. High, moderate, and zero exposure was provided by a cultural immersion camp (CIC), a university‐based day camp (UDC), and a recreational sports camp (RSC), respectively. CIC (n=47) delivered 4 culturally adapted nutrition lessons within the context of Chamorro cultural traditions. The UDC (n=23) delivered the same lessons within a physiology framework. The RSC (n=33) was without nutrition lessons and cultural immersion. Children's willingness to try FV was assessed with the interview‐administered WillTry tool before (± 2 weeks) and after (± 1 week) each summer program. Outcomes examined WillTry post‐scores using multivariate regression models adjusting for the relevant pre‐score, sex, age, ethnicity, dose, BMI, and parent's cultural affiliation. Post‐WillTry scores for local novel FV by highest exposure camp to lowest were 2.30, 2.33, 2.27. For local common FV, the post‐scores were 2.62, 2.61, 2.56, respectively. No differences by the primary outcomes were found. An unexpected result was the higher imported FV WillTry post‐score of 2.81 for RSC compared to the 2.75 for UDC (P=0.023). The Traditions study is the first to explore novel influences on dietary habits and reveals further research involving indigenous peoples and cultural immersion are needed.
