Dermatologic surgery can be safely performed in an outpatient setting without a significant risk of infection. Certain anatomic sites, such as the ear, as well as size of postoperative defect, are important factors in predicting the risk of postoperative wound infection.
Eccrine ductal carcinoma is a rare adnexal tumor. Squamoid eccrine ductal carcinoma (SEDC) represents an exceptionally rare variant with only 6 cases reported to date. This neoplasm is deeply infiltrative and may provide a diagnostic challenge in superficial shave biopsies of skin. We present a case of SEDC in an immunocompromised patient, who, after an initial shave biopsy for diagnostic purposes, underwent a complete excision of his tumor by Mohs micrographic surgery. A combined histologic and immunohistochemical approach is necessary to identify and confirm the unique characteristics of SEDC. Because this cancer is very rare and little is known about its biologic behavior, optimal diagnostic and treatment guidelines need to be developed.
Retinoids are a group of naturally occurring and synthetic compounds with vitamin A‐like biological activity. They play an important role in vision, reproduction, growth, and epithelial cell differentiation. Recent discoveries of specific retinoid cellular binding proteins and nuclear receptors have led to a better (although not complete) understanding of the complex mechanisms of retinoid action. Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated beneficial effects of retinoids on skin diseases such as acne, psoriasis, ichthyoses, keratodermas, skin cancers and their precursors, as well as a reversal of the effects of photoaging.
