Background: Spinal tuberculosis is a great problem in the health sector. Objective: The purpose of the present study was to see the see the socio-demographic characteristics of spinal tuberculosis patients. Methodology: This study was designed as descriptive cross sectional study which was carried out in the Department of Neurosurgery at Dhaka Medical College Hospital during the period of January 2002 to December 2004 for a period of two (2) years. All the patients who were presented with spinal tuberculosis at any age with both sexes were included as study population. The details of socio-economic condition were recorded of all the patients. Confirmation of spinal tuberculosis was made by CT-scan and MRI. Finally biopsy was done to confirm the cases by histopathology. Results: In this study, 50 cases of tuberculosis of the spine patients were recruited for this study. The mean age with SD was 25.4±18.65 years. The sex distribution shows male preponderance with a male and female ratio of 1.63:1. Regarding the socioeconomic status 33 (66%) patients came from low class society. In this study majority of the study population were illiterate which was 19(38.0%) cases. Most of the patients were day labourer which was 17(34.0%) cases. Conclusion: In conclusion young adult male patients are most commonly affected by spinal tuberculosis. [Journal of National Institute of Neurosciences Bangladesh, 2016;2(2): [48][49][50]
Background: Spontaneous pyogenic spondylodiscitis is an uncommon clinical condition. But in our country it is not infrequent. High level of clinical suspicion is necessary for diagnoses of spontaneous pyogenic spondylodiscitis. There is no study regarding this issue in Bangladesh. Objective: The objective of this study was to see the epidemiological feature and types of surgical treatment of spontaneous pyogenic spondylodiscitis in Bangladesh Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective observational study. This study was done in the Department of Neurosurgery, National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The study period was January, 2016 to July, 2021 for a period of 5.5 years. 17 patients who were undergone surgery included in the study. The data were collected from questionnaires and hospital records and analyzed. Results: In our study the highest incidence was found in 4th (23.52%) and 6th (29.42%) decade of life which was around 53%. The male to female ratio was about 2: 1.The present study showed the most common involvement was in lumbar region (35.31%), in dorsal and sacral region it was 23.52% and the cervical region in 17.65%. Regarding surgical treatment in cervical region both anterior (with fixation) and posterior approach was done, in dorsal, lumbar and sacral region posterior approach with or without fixation was done. Conclusion: In Bangladesh the incidence of Spontaneous pyogenic spondylodiscitis is relative high. It is more common in advance age with male predominance. Most frequently affected region was lumber. Surgical technique was individualized for every case. Bang. J Neurosurgery 2022; 11(2): 64-69
Spinal epidermoid cysts are cystic tumours lined by squamous epithelium. Unlike dermoid cysts, they do not contain skin appendages (hair follicles, sweat glands, sebaceous glands). They are usually extramedullary but rarely can be intramedullary. They may be congenital or acquired. Especially they are not associated with spinal dysraphism. Intramedullary epidermoid cysts of the spinal cord are rare tumours, only few cases having been reported in the literature. They comprise between 0.5% to 1% of all spinal tumours but account for up to 10% of intraspinal tumours in children. We report a case of 45 years-old female patient who presented with a 18 months history of progressive lower extremity weakness and spasticity. But her bowel/bladder function was normal. Magnetic resonance imaging of the thoracic spine revealed a 3 cm intramedullary mass at the T3-4 level. A T3 to T5 laminnectomy with complete removal of the intradural mass was performed. Intraoperative findings and final histopathological examination revealed an
Schwannomas are encapsulated tumors arising from Schwann cells of the nerve sheath, and are usually solitary sporadic lesions. The schwannoma of the ilio-hypogastric nerve especially in the retro-petoneal space is very rare. We are reporting a case of the schwannoma of the left ilio-hypagastric nerve over the psoas muscle. The diagnosis was done by ultarsonogrsphy and MRI. The histopathological study confirmed the diagnosis. The tumour was excised through retro-peritoneal approach. By this approach total excision of the tumour with preservation of ilio-hypogastric nerve is possible. Journal of Science Foundation 2019;17(2):71-74
