Writing has been considered the most difficult skill to master by EFL university students. It needs more effort and time for mastery. Some challenges in writing can make students confused. This condition has inspired the researchers to conduct the study. The study aims to identify the common errors in first-year students’ essay writing and provide suggestive solutions for the problems encountered by the students. This study was implemented using quantitative and qualitative approaches (mixed method). The researchers analyzed 205 students’ essays to identify the writing errors. After that, they randomly interviewed selected students to find the specific problems and suggestions. The data gathered were then classified and analyzed thematically. Based on the analyzed data, the most frequent error was faulty sentences which was 60.41%, grammar as the second error was 16.88%, the third error was mechanics with 13.1%, and vocabulary and other errors were 5.38% and 4.22%. The result shows that most students got difficulty writing sentences correctly. Therefore, providing appropriate learning materials for students and giving feedback on their writing are suggested.

Sastra merupakan suatu karya seni ekspresif yang berbentuk lisan atau tulisan yang memiliki ciri khas seperti keindahan, keaslian, bersifat imajinatif dan bernilai positif bagi manusia. Pencipta dan penikmat karya sastra dapat berasal dari orang dewasa dan anak-anak tergantung dari tingkat pemahamannya. Terdapat permasalahan sendiri dalam sastra yaitu dalam menghadirkan imajinasi, mimpi, dan realitas. Penggunaan kritik sastra dapat mempermudah dalam menganalisis dan menginterpretasi kaitan antar karya sastra dengan realita. Pendekatan mimetis dipilih untuk melihat hubungan antara isi karya sastra dengan kehidupan nyata. Penelitian ini menggunakan analisis isi dalam mengkaji data. Peneliti mencoba memahami beberapa puisi dalam buku “Rumah Daging dan Pikiran” karya Malkan Junaidi. Oleh karena itu, suatu karya sastra dapat mewakili aspirasi dan dinamika dalam kehidupan di masyarakat.

This study aims to identify and describe the genre text, types of theme, mood, transitivity in systemic functional linguistics, and translation techniques This research is a descriptive, qualitative research. The data sources in this study are watch advertisements in Colours Magazine January Edition, the year 2016 until 2018. The data studied in this study were genre text, translation techniques, theme, mood and transitivity in systemic functional linguistics which were obtained from Colours Magazine in part watch promotional text. The sampling technique used is purposive sampling. The result showed that the translation is getting better year by year based on the appearance and systemic functional linguistics. There are no much changes between the target language and source language.
