This paper presents an exploratory study on translators' decisions when encountering foodrelated translation difficulties in a parallel corpus of German original narrative texts and their translations into Spanish and Catalan. For this purpose, all food and drink related lexemes in the German original texts were extracted and classified in semantic groups. As a second step, the source and target text fragments of lexemes related to food-related cultural referents, metaphorical expressions or ways of eating and drinking were extracted and analysed in view of the techniques applied by the translators of both language combinations. The results obtained through the classification and quantification of the translation techniques in these three domains allow conclusions to be drawn regarding a) the existence of foreignizing or domesticating tendencies in the translation of food terms, b) the ways translators deal with action verbs that encompass multiple meaning aspects and c) the degree of metaphoricity and food-relatedness in the translation of metaphorical expressions.
This paper examines the salience of Manner-of-motion and its translation in a multilingual corpus of graphic novels, with the dual aim of further investigating the role of visual language in Slobin’s Thinking-for-translating hypothesis and identifying the relevant translation techniques. Many studies that draw on the hypothesis have shown, for instance, that, in the translation process from a satellite-framed language (e. g. German, English) into a verb-framed language (e. g. Spanish, French), Manner-of-motion is usually omitted, whereas in the translation process between languages belonging to the same typological group, it is generally transferred, although some intratypological variation has also been identified in the literature. The corpus studied allows both inter- and intratypological analyses: it is composed of two graphic novels by the Austrian cartoonist Ulli Lust and their corresponding translations into Spanish, French and English. The resulting data were compared with previous research in the field. The paper concludes that, although visual language minimizes the consequences of Thinking-for-translating, the conventions and restrictions of graphic novels deserve greater attention within this framework.
This contribution presents a section of the Corpus Valencià de Literatura Traduïda (COVALT), created by the research group of the same name (Department of Translation and Communication, Universitat Jaume I, Spain). The COVALT corpus is a four-million word corpus made up of narrative works originally written in English, French, and German and their Catalan translations published in the autonomous community of Valencia between 1990 and 2000. Since the members of the Covalt group are interested in translation research, and more specifically in the investigation of translated Catalan and Spanish, this corpus has recently been extended to include translations into Spanish published in Spain (COVALT PAR_ES corpus). This chapter presents the COVALT PAR_ES corpus, as well as its process of compilation and analysis with CQPweb.
Revista de Lingüística Teórica y Aplicada, 54 (1), I Sem. 2016 ABSTRACTAlthough Corpus linguistics has advanced a great deal in recent years and is now being increasingly more frequently included within research projects regarding Linguistics and Translation (for instance: Kübler & Foucou, 2003;Laroche & Langlais, 2010), the most advanced technical procedures focused on the creation and exploitation of corpora are still a pitfall. The main aim of this paper is, then, to make this kind of information more widely available to the research community with little experience in the field. In particular, it presents the experience of creating a parallel corpus that was aligned with INTRODuCCIÓNExiste un amplio consenso en cuanto a que la lingüística de corpus constituye una herramienta óptima para el estudio de fenómenos lingüísticos y traductológicos (véase, por ejemplo: Bernardini, 2004;Aston, 2009;Kübler, 2011). Cuando un investigador dispone del corpus adecuado para sus fines y una interfaz de bús-queda que le permita extraer de él la información específica que busca, los corpus electrónicos ...
