Aim This review was conducted to map leadership styles that positively impact patients, professionals and institutions. Background Leadership is a topic widely studied because it is a fundamental skill in establishing favourable work environments, in addition to enabling nurses to influence their team in the search for better results. Therefore, a synthesis of the various studies produced to date is essential for nurses, managers and researchers to understand the different styles of leadership that positively influence organizational results, so they can choose the style they deem most appropriate. Evaluation An integrative literature review retrieved articles from five databases, following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The level of evidence and its quality were assessed using the criteria of the Joanna Briggs Institute. Key issues Thirty‐five studies were included, 18 of which reported the influence of leadership styles on patients (safety), nine on professionals (burnout) and eight on institutions (turnover and absenteeism). Conclusion Transformational leadership had positive results for patients, professionals, and institutions alike. Implications for Nursing Management The results showed the need for nurses to improve their leadership skills, especially in the transformational style, to achieve positive results.
Purpose: To prepare and validate the content of a checklist in order to assure the safety for outpatient surgical procedures. Method: Methodological research, performed between May and December 2018, as per three stages: 1) preparation of the checklist; 2) validation of content by five judges; and 3) preliminary testing of the instrument. The concord, among the judges, was measured by the Content Validity Index and the values over 0.9 were considered as being satisfactory. Results: Initially the instrument was prepared having 58 items, considering the heading and six topics. In the first round, two topics and 27 items had an index below 0.9. After reformulations, in the second round, only two items had values below 0.9 and, in the third, all items reached an index of 1.0. Along the preliminary testing, modifications were realized. The final version it has 43 items, distributed as per five topics. Conclusion: The “Checklist for Safe Surgery regarding Ambulatory Surgical Procedures” was prepared and its contents were validated.
Objective: to investigate, in the literature, evidence on the influence of different styles of leadership on results with patients, professionals and institutions. Method: integrative review of the literature on the portals Virtual Health Library (VHL) and Pubmed and databases Scopus, CINAHL and Embase, using the following descriptors: "leadership", "nursing", "patient safety", “burnout, professional”, "absenteeism" and "personnel turnover" in original articles. Results: 26 publications were included, of which 14 were related to patient outcomes (patient safety), ten related to professionals (burnout) and four to the institution (rotation). Regarding the patients, the leadership style that contributed the most to the favorable results was the transformational, followed by situational, ethical, clinical and coaching. Regarding the development of burnout, the leadership that contributed the most to the reduction of the level of the syndrome was the authentic one, followed by the transformational one and, as far as the intention to leave the job, the authentic one, followed by the transformational leadership were the ones that contributed the most to diminish this intention. In this item, abusive leadership contributed to the desire of professionals to quit their jobs. Conclusion: transformational and authentic leaderships were the ones that most influenced the positive results with patients, professionals and institutions.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
