Certifiable management systems, such as ISO 9001 Quality Management System (QMS), ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) and OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS), have gained popularity within different countries around the world. The integration of these management systems (MS) that work in a separated way has been pointed out by many researchers as a way to improve the overall management system efficiency. In this context, it is remarkable the engagement of the Journal of Cleaner Production (JCP) in contributing to developing the Integrated Management System (IMS) field. The objective of the present study is to analyze the evolution of IMS research on JCP, presenting its contributions and gaps in the IMS scope. The analysis was conducted through a theoretical framework of IMS on JCP. The identified contributions were split into five groups: (I) IMS and Sustainability, (II) IMS and Strategy, Performance and Innovation, (III) Analysis of integration levels and motivations, benefits and difficulties of IMS implementation, (IV) IMS methods, guidelines and maturity model and (V) IMS and Corporate Social Responsibility. The results showed the JCP is the most influential journal in IMS area. Regarding the gaps in the IMS literature, we found lack of studies approaching IMS and performance (mainly environmental performance), IMS and sustainability, methods and guidelines for IMS based on empirical evidences, analysis of the levels of integration and motivations, benefits and difficulties taking into account the implementation strategy adopted, IMS and innovation management and IMS and social responsibility. It is suggested the gaps found in this paper are explored in future studies.
Bibliometric analysis is an indispensable statistic tool to map the state of the art in a given area of scientific knowledge and identify essential information for various purposes, such as prospecting research opportunities and substantiating scientific researches. Therefore, the objective of this chapter is to present a method of bibliometric analysis for mapping the state of the art and identifying gaps and trends of research. The method encompasses instruments to identify and analyze the scientific performance of articles, authors, institutions, countries, and journals based on the number of citations, to reveal the trends of the field studied through the analysis of keywords, and to identify and cluster scientific gaps from most recent publications. This method enables to expand in a scientific way the boundaries of science by investigating and identifying relevant and avant-garde research topics. It is an essential element that provides researchers means to identify and support paths towards the development of scientific projects.
The Integrated Management System (IMS) seems to be a suitable strategy to manage multiple systems that have to meet the needs and expectations of various stakeholders. The main objective of this research is to establish the guiding principles of IMS and the essential elements for its development and maintenance in order to move towards unifying a starting point in the literature. This objective was reached through a systematic content analysis with focus on the content analysis of the most cited articles of Scopus and Web of Science databases from 2006 to 2016. The results indicate the existence of 28 elements for development and implementation of IMS. Through the critical analysis of these elements 6 principles of IMS were systematized: 1) Systemic Management; 2) Standardization; 3) Strategic, tactic and operational integration; 4) Organizational learning; 5) Debureaucratization; and 6) Continuous Improvement. Each principle is a pillar for development and maintenance of IMS. The scientific contribution of this study is that it represents a starting point towards the establishment of the IMS theory. Moreover, taking into account these results one can homogenize the basis of IMS, providing research results with a higher degree of comparability. The results of this work may also help company managers better target their efforts in the management of the IMS, serving as a guideline to assist them in developing and maintaining each one of the abovementioned pillars. The best of the authors' knowledge, this is one of the first attempts to unify the literature.
The purpose of this article is to characterize and discuss the elements and functions most commonly integrated in Brazilian companies certified by the management systems ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 and to identify the benefits and difficulties from integration. This study contributes with suggestions of achievements to overcome the major difficulties and challenges faced during the integration process. In order to support the research, the theoretical framework was conducted comprising certifiable management systems (ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001) and Integrated Management Systems. The study was based on a qualitative approach supported by an analysis in the practical context, which examined the results of fourteen case studies in Brazilian industrial companies. The development of the research involved three visits in each one of the companies studied. The results indicated the most integrated elements and functions in the companies studied are the high management responsibility, work instructions, control of documents and records, internal communication and structure and accountability. Further, the benefits of integration were the improvement in efficiency of operations and internal communication, greater agility in the decision-making process, increase in the quality of goods and services produced or provided and increase in reliability of the products and processes. The main difficulties were the complexity of integration process and the high amount of human and financial resources spent on implementation.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
