The role of Public Libraries in meeting the information needs of the Community cannot be neglected. The Library is meant to serve the needs of all and sundry in the society without any bias. The main objective of this study was to examine the services of the Public Libraries in meeting the information needs of Post Secondary School Students in Public Libraries in Nigeria. The study adopted a Descriptive Survey Design and the Simple Random Sampling Techniques was used to select one hundred and fifty respondents (Post-Secondary School Students) in three selected Public Libraries, that is, Oyo, Ogun and Kwara State Library Boards. The questionnaire was the instrument used to collect data for the study, while descriptive statistics with tables of frequencies and percentages was used in analysing the data. The study revealed that the information needs of the Post-Secondary School Students were information on academic work, personal development and sports news and recreation. Different services rendered by Public Libraries were looked into. Inadequate information resources were the major factor militating against the Public Library services to the Post-Secondary School Students. Various reasons why post-secondary school students use the public library were also highlighted. It is recommended that adequate information resources be provided in Public Libraries so that information needs of the user can be met.
A nation is said to be developed economically when its citizen reaches the high possible standard of living. The key role of education towards the attainment of sustainable development has made qualitative education a key component of the Seven-Point Agenda of sustainable integration. This in turn requires a well equipped Academic Library on our tertiary institutions to improve our educational system. Academic Library is an institution that is well established to take care of the information needs of students, lecturers, researchers and other comity of scholars. The library is continuously bringing man in contact with the world in the fulfilment of its functions as a repository for knowledge in all forms and shapes. The realization of the enormous power of information has made Academic Library and information resource centres inevitably present in many sectors of Nigeria's economy. The level and quality of Academic library participation in a populace such; as education, agricultural activities, health and commercial activities are paramount contributory factors to the level of economic and all development of Nigeria. It is therefore important that Academic Library should be given a stake holder roles for the Nigeria's economic development.
This study investigated various problems of conservation and preservation of library resources in African academic libraries. Particularly, it examined the overview of preservation and conservation of library resources. It also studied the causes of deterioration of library information resources, among which are: natural aging process, level of use of library materials, inherent chemical content used in the process of paper making, high temperature and fluctuating relative humidity, improper handling of library materials among many others were equally discussed. Various preventive measures were equally discussed. Different challenges facing preservation and conservation of library resources in African Academic Libraries were presented. Useful suggestions were also made to ameliorate the situation.
