Internet offers countless opportunities that affect students' lives and their career potentials. With the help of Internet, youth development processes are positively encouraged. In order to understand how Internet can influence Positive Youth Development (PYD), this study was carried out with an attempt to identify the relationship between problems of using Internet, income, and PYD with the mediate effects of Internet use gratification among Malaysian youth. A quantitative survey method was used to collect data from 440 students (142 male and 298 female) majoring in science and social science from University Putra Malaysia using stratified random sampling. The results show that there is a mediate effect for Internet use gratification with problems of using Internet and five dimensions of PYD; however, this relationship is not significant for the role of income. In addition, no significant difference was found between science and social science groups. The relationship between Internet use gratification and 5Cs (connection, competence, character, caring, confidence) proved to be significant. There is no statistically meaningful relationship between participants' income and 5Cs except for confidence. There is no significant relationship between income and Internet use gratification. There is also no significant relationship between problem of using Internet and the (5Cs); however, this relationship proved to be significant with Internet use gratification. Implications of the study are also discussed.
Youth are significant consumers of internet technologies. Sometimes, adolescents are directly involved in problematic internet usage, such as online gambling and pornography. They are indirectly exposed to some negative behavior, such as alcohol usage, drug usage, internet addiction, and social isolation. This study aims to identify the relationship between six factors of negative behavior and gratification in using the internet among 440 Malaysian youth by collecting data via survey. The theory applied is the uses and gratification theory (U&G). The results revealed no meaningful relationship between the gratification of using the internet and pornography, online gambling, alcohol, and drug usage. However, there was a significant positive relationship between the gratification of internet use, social isolation, and internet addiction.
Furthermore, the findings of Sam et al. [5] study also revealed that undergraduate students in Malaysia, specifically from the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology tend to use the Internet more extensively for downloading software and games as compared to undergraduate students from the Faculty of Applied and Creative Arts whom tend to use the Internet more significantly and extensively for something else. However, in terms of time spent on the Internet, the findings of Sam et al. [5] study have not shown any significant differences with regard to gender and time spent on the Internet. Apart from this, the findings of the study revealed that there was a significant difference with regards to the level of usage based on faculties whereby the findings of the study have revealed that undergraduate students from the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology and undergraduate students from the Faculty of Applied and Creative Arts recorded significantly more time in using the Internet as compared to undergraduate students from other faculties. However, the findings of Selwyn [6] study had revealed that female undergraduate students were more likely to use the Internet for academic purposes such as information seeking as compared to the male counterparts which tend to use the Internet for other reasons. These findings obviously indicate contrasting results as compared to the findings of Sam et al. [5] study which is supported by Mossberge et al. [7] which suggests that "gender differences in terms of Internet usage and engagement have all but disappeared". Furthermore, Kraus and Shullman [8] assured that the amount of time spent online (on the Internet) has risen significantly over the years whereby the findings of their study on the tracking lifestyle, media habits and spending patterns among Americans aged between 18 to
According to international statistics and domestic research, the rate of law-abidingness in Iran is low. There is a positive significant relationship between political satisfaction, success priority of material preference system, and law-abidingness. The relationship between nepotism, trust, and law-abidingness is negative.
