Abstract. As interest in provenance grows among the Semantic Web community, it is recognized as a useful tool across many domains. However, existing automatic provenance collection techniques are not universally applicable. Most existing methods either rely on (low-level) observed provenance, or require that the user discloses formal workflows. In this paper, we propose a new approach for automatic discovery of provenance, at multiple levels of granularity. To accomplish this, we detect entity derivations, relying on clustering algorithms, linked data and semantic similarity. The resulting derivations are structured in compliance with the Provenance Data Model (PROV-DM). While the proposed approach is purposely kept general, allowing adaptation in many use cases, we provide an implementation for one of these use cases, namely discovering the sources of news articles. With this implementation, we were able to detect 73% of the original sources of 410 news stories, at 68% precision. Lastly, we discuss possible improvements and future work.
Searching for relevant webpages and following hyperlinks to related content is a widely accepted and effective approach to information seeking on the textual web. Existing work on multimedia information retrieval has focused on search for individual relevant items or on content linking without specific attention to search results. We describe our research exploring integrated multimodal search and hyperlinking for multimedia data. Our investigation is based on the MediaEval 2012 Search and Hyperlinking task. This includes a known-item search task using the Blip10000 internet video collection, where automatically created hyperlinks link each relevant item to related items within the collection. The search test queries and link assessment for this task was generated using the Amazon Mechanical Turk crowdsourcing platform. Our investigation examines a range of alternative methods which seek to address the challenges of search and hyperlinking using multimodal approaches. The results of our experiments are used to propose a research agenda for developing effective techniques for search and hyperlinking of multimedia content.
In recent years, research in information diffusion in social media has attracted a lot of attention, since the produced data is fast, massive and viral. Additionally, the provenance of such data is equally important because it helps to judge the relevance and trustworthiness of the information enclosed in the data. However, social media currently provide insufficient m echanisms f or provenance, while models of information diffusion use their own concepts and notations, targeted to specific use cases. In this paper, we propose a model for information diffusion and provenance, based on the W3C PROV Data Model. The advantage is that PROV is a Web-native and interoperable format that allows easy publication of provenance data, and minimizes the integration effort among different systems making use of PROV.
