Greywater reuse is the use of water from sinks, showers, baths, or laundry such that water is used twice without energy intensive wastewater treatment, which is required for reclaimed water. Greywater reuse is currently regulated and permitted in several states, but the regulations vary in terms of implementation and greywater application. For example, the recently revised regulations in California (July 2009) restrict greywater reuse to subsurface irrigation or minimum mulch, rock, or soil coverage, which limits large-scale (economical) application. However, ongoing greywater research may soon provide guidance to regulations such that greywater reuse is more feasible. The purpose of this paper is to identify the needs for unrestricted greywater reuse, and to evaluate the potential impacts to municipal wastewater utilities if greywater becomes a feasible and competitive water resource.
