This study examined the behavior of the taxpayer in relation to tax compliance. This study developed the Theory of Fiscal Psychology and Subjective Norm to explain tax compliance behavior. The research sample of 323 individual taxpayers in the Central Java. Data collection was conducted by survey method. This study provides empirical evidence that Theory of Fiscal Psychology and Subjective Norm can explain tax compliance behavior. This means that the tax compliance behavior is influenced by the intention to comply, while the intention to comply is influenced by subjective norms and of the perception of the government.
Purpose This paper aims to discuss the factors that cause individuals to commit fraud, especially in the public procurement context. All this time, an empirical review of public procurement fraud has only focused on the macro and micro level, as well as its losses on the country's economy. This paper highlights individuals’ fraudulent behavior from the four elements of the fraud diamond theory, namely, pressure, opportunity, rationalization and capability. Design/methodology/approach This paper is a literature review that discusses the fraudulent behavior of bureaucrat as a procurement official in the context of public procurement. This review uses fraud diamond theory as its theoretical framework to explain the attributes to do fraud. Findings Public procurement is a high-risk area for fraud (corruption), particularly in the government institution. It cannot be denied that the situation factor (pressure and opportunity) will interact with psychological aspects (rationalization) and individual capability to direct the individuals to commit fraud. This study discusses how existing pressure (motivation) and opportunities are used by individuals who have the capability to rationalize their actions. This literature review also endeavors to shed light on the strategy to prevent, detect and control the causes of fraud. Practical implications This paper provides an understanding of regulators, auditors and other employees in recognizing the characteristics and nature of fraud antecedents. This understanding can help prevent various forms of procurement fraud that occur within their organizations. This paper also can be a guideline to assist public sector organizations in designing effective internal control systems to prevent fraud in the process and practice of public procurement. Social implications Public procurement has a central role that enables the government to allocate the budget effectively and efficiently. Compliance in implementing procurement rules and procedures will improve the quality of public services. Originality/value There exists relatively little study outlining the factors underlying of bureaucrats’ (procurement official) opportunistic behavior on procurement activities. The authors focused on bureaucrats’ behavior because they have unique positions of power and responsibility of the procurement process. On the one hand, they have a crucial role in serving the public and safeguarding public assets. On the other hand, they have the ability to collaborate with politicians and business actors in corrupt procurement practices. Therefore, the discussion on this topic is very relevant and interesting.
This study aimed to determine the effect of leverage and firm size toward earnings management. This study used a sample of the financial report data from manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesia stock exchange for the 2013-2017 period. The data analysis testing in this study employed EViews (Econometric Views). The results showed that the best panel regression model in this study was random effect model. Consistent with agency theory and positive accounting theory, leverage and firm size has a positive effect on the earnings management for manufacturing companies in Indonesia. The empirical results showed that leverage and firm size increases provide encouragement for managers to manipulate earnings.
This study aims to examine the effect of related party transactions (RPTs) on banks’ performance and investigates political connections as moderator in their causal relationship. Our sample is 40 Indonesian banks listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange for the years 2013–2016 with 160 observations as panel data. Based on panel data regression test, our results demonstrate that account receivables-related RPTs have a positive effect on banks’ profitability and its market performance (Tobin’s Q), but there are consequences of high operating costs and the risk of non-performing loans. Banks receive more funds from their related parties (account payables-related RPTs), banks exhibit higher capital capability and lower market performance. Further, the political connection index in banks significantly affect banks’ capability, liquidity, efficiency, and market value through RPTs. This result indicates that political connection strengthens the effects of RPTs on banks’ performance. Although this study has limited information in determining political connections and has not considered macroeconomic conditions, these findings imply that political connection plays an important role in banks’ performance in Indonesia.
This study aims to investigate empirically the effect of accrual earnings management and real earnings management on firm value. The analysis technique used is multiple linear regression analysis. The research samples were manufacturing firms listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange during the period of 2013 to 2017. The analysis tool used is Multiple Linear Regression. The test results showed that accrual earnings management measured by discretionary accruals did not affect on value of the firm. Real earnings management was found to have a negative effect on firm value.
