Kozeny-Carman permeability equation is an important relation for the determination of permeability in porous media. In this study, the permeabilities of porous media that contains rectangular rods are determined, numerically. The applicability of Kozeny-Carman equation for the periodic porous media is investigated and the effects of porosity and pore to throat size ratio on Kozeny constant are studied. The continuity and NavierStokes equations are solved to determine the velocity and pressure fields in the voids between the rods. Based on the obtained flow field, the permeability values for different porosities from 0.2 to 0.9 and pore to throat size ratio values from 1.63 to 7.46 are computed. Then Kozeny constants for different porous media with various porosity and pore to throat size ratios are obtained and a relationship between Kozeny constant, porosity and pore to throat size ratio is constructed. The study reveals that the pore to throat size ratio is an important geometrical parameter that should be taken into account for deriving a correlation for permeability. The suggestion of a fixed value for Kozeny constant makes the application of Kozeny-Carman permeability equation too narrow for a very specific porous medium. However, it is possible to apply the Kozeny-Carman permeability equation for wide ranges of porous media with different geometrical parameters (various porosity, hydraulic diameter, particle size and aspect ratio) if Kozeny constant is a function of two parameters as porosity and pore to throat size ratios.
Background The burden and duration of persistent symptoms after non-severe COVID-19 remains uncertain. This study aimed to assess post-infection symptom trajectories in home-isolated COVID-19 cases compared to age- and time-period matched seronegative controls, and investigate immunological correlates of long COVID. Methods A prospective case-control study conducted between February 28th and April 4th 2020 included home-isolated COVID-19 cases followed for 12 (n = 233) to 18 (n = 149) months, and 189 age-matched SARS-CoV-2 naive controls. We collected clinical data at baseline, 6, 12 and 18 months post-infection, and blood samples at 2, 4, 6 and 12 months for analysis of SARS-CoV-2 specific humoral and cellular responses. Results Overall, 46% (108/233) had persisting symptoms 12 months after COVID-19. Compared to controls, adult cases had a high risk of fatigue (27% excess risk, gender and comorbidity adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 5.86, 95% confidence interval [CI]3.27-10.5), memory problems (21% excess risk, aOR 7.42, CI 3.51-15.67), concentration problems (20% excess risk, aOR 8.88, CI 3.88-20.35), and dyspnea (10% excess risk, aOR 2.66, CI 1.22-5.79). The prevalence of memory problems increased overall from 6 to 18 months (excess risk 11.5%, CI 1.5, 21.5, p = 0.024) and among women (excess risk 18.7%, CI 4.4, 32.9, p = 0.010). Longitudinal spike IgG was significantly associated with dyspnea at 12 months. The spike-specific clonal CD4 + TCRβ depth was significantly associated with both dyspnea and number of symptoms at 12 months. Conclusions This study documents a high burden of persisting symptoms after mild COVID-19, and suggest that infection induced SARS-CoV-2 specific immune responses may influence long-term symptoms.
Purpose: Intrauterine undernutrition is associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes. Children born premature or small for gestational age were reported to have abnormal retinal vascularization. However, whether intrauterine famine act as a trigger for diabetes complications, including retinopathy, is unknown. The aim of the current study was to evaluate longterm effects of perinatal famine on the risk of proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Methods: We studied the risk for PDR among type 2 diabetes patients exposed to perinatal famine in two independent cohorts: the Ukrainian National Diabetes Registry (UNDR) and the Hong Kong Diabetes Registry (HKDR). We analysed individuals born during the Great Famine (the Holodomor, 1932(the Holodomor, -1933 and the WWII (1941WWII ( -1945 famine in 101 095 (3601 had PDR) UNDR participants. Among 3021 (251 had PDR) HKDR participants, we studied type 2 diabetes patients exposed to perinatal famine during the WWII Japanese invasion in 1942-1945. Results: During the Holodomor and WWII, perinatal famine was associated with a 1.76-fold (p = 0.019) and 3.02-fold (p = 0.001) increased risk of severe PDR in the UNDR. The risk for PDR was 1.66-fold elevated among individuals born in 1942 in the HKDR (p < 0.05). The associations between perinatal famine and PDR remained statistically significant after corrections for HbA1c in available 18 507 UNDR (p additive interaction < 0.001) and in 3021 HKDR type 2 diabetes patients (p < 0.05). Conclusion:In conclusion, type 2 diabetes patients, exposed to perinatal famine, have increased risk of PDR compared to those without perinatal famine exposure. Further studies are needed to understand the underlying mechanisms and to extend this finding to other diabetes complications.
In this study, the effects of pore to throat size ratio on the interfacial heat transfer coefficient for a periodic porous media containing inline array of rectangular rods are investigated, numerically. The continuity, Navier-Stokes, and energy equations are solved for the representative elementary volume (REV) of the porous media to obtain the microscopic velocity and temperature distributions in the voids between the rods. Based on the obtained microscopic temperature distributions, the interfacial convective heat transfer coefficients and the corresponding Nusselt numbers are computed. The study is performed for pore to throat size ratios between 1.63 and 7.46, porosities from 0.7 to 0.9, and Reynolds numbers between 1 and 100. It is found that in addition to porosity and Reynolds number, the parameter of pore to throat size ratio plays an important role on the heat transfer in porous media. For the low values of pore to throat size ratios (i.e., b ¼ 1.63), Nusselt number increases with porosity while for the high values of pore to throat size ratios (i.e., b ¼ 7.46), the opposite behavior is observed. Based on the obtained numerical results, a correlation for the determination of Nusselt number in terms of porosity, pore to throat size ratio, Reynolds and Prandtl numbers is proposed.
