This paper examined the use of social media for professional development by librarians in Nigeria. The study was carried out using the survey research method. The study population was made up of 1294 registered members of Nigerian Library Association Online Forum. Random sampling technique was used in selecting 297 respondents for the study. Data was collected by means of questionnaire. Findings from the study revealed that online discussion forums such as NLA online forum, online social networks such as Facebook and Wikis were mostly used for professional development, while others such as podcast and book marking tools were used minimally. Librarians were also found to learn mostly by reading through the conversations of others and joining discussion groups. Based on the findings, the study concluded that librarians in Nigeria actively seek means of professional development using social media and recommends among others, that the use of social media applications such as podcast and bookmarking tools be explored as they could also contribute to professional learning/development.
This study investigated the job satisfaction factors influencing the job satisfaction of librarians in Federal and State University libraries in Southern Nigeria. Job satisfaction is an important concept that can affect labor market behavior as it has a great influence on job-related behaviors such as productivity, work effort, absenteeism, turnover rates, and employee relations. The study adopted the survey research design. The population was made up of 500 librarians in thirty seven federal and state university libraries in Southern Nigeria. Sampling was enumeration as all members of the population were given the opportunity to participate. A questionnaire was used for data collection and was analyzed using percentages, standard deviation, and mean. Among other factors indentified, it was shown that job security, satisfactory relationship with my supervisor, satisfactory interaction with colleagues and satisfactory interaction with information user/customer/ clients were significant factors that influenced the librarians' job satisfaction. However, satisfaction with salary and fringe benefits, working condition, and opportunities to conduct research were rated low which signifies that the librarians are not satisfied with these job satisfaction facets. Based on this, recommendations such as library administrators considering improving the salary levels and the fringe benefits of the librarians, improving their working conditions; and granting the librarians opportunities to conduct research were made.
This research was focused on examining the extent of use and the attitude of undergraduate (UG) students towards the use of electronic information resources (EIRs). It aimed to establish the relationship between UG students' attitude and their use of EIRs in university libraries in SouthWest , Nigeria. The descriptive as well as correlational survey design was adopted for the study. The purposive and proportionate stratified random sampling techniques were employed in selecting the study population and sample size while questionnaire and oral interview were used as instruments for data collection. The findings revealed that EIRs are not adequately utilised as the UG students have negative attitude towards its use. They assume that additional special computing skills are required before one can be competent enough to effectively utilise these resources. The study also established that there is significant relationship between UG students' attitude and their use of EIRs provided in the library and also provides practical insights into the consequences of having negative attitude towards the use of libraries' EIRs. Recommendations geared towards ameliorating the problems were also made.
