Nowadays, the development of the teaching and learning of English as a foreign language has been transformed. Learners do not only focus on the learning of speaking and writing but also reading since they are required to be able to smartly respond to the texts they are reading. The development of the information and technology forces the focus of teaching and learning on the critical reading that might be less interesting for the students. The students may not know their interest in reading before they start reading. A unique condition in Magelang regency, a small town close to Yogyakarta, the students of senior high schools have achieved their best achievement for their learning that can be seen from the rank of the school that becomes the best school in terms of the final examination in Central Java. To know the teaching and learning of English in that school can be an alternative for other schools. Based on the case study conducted in some schools in Magelang regency, it can be found that the teaching and learning are still varied. The findings were discussed under the following terms; students’ reading activities, mastery of reading skills, reading materials, and reading modality. It is a problem for the success of language teaching as the students can have low motivation in reading if the reading materials were not interesting for them.
This study was a need analysis study as a part of the research and development of instructional materials for English for Business (EFB) at Universitas Muhammadiyah Magelang. This study was aimed at finding the students’ needs on their EFB course in terms of their personal characteristics, English proficiency assumption, learning motivation, and personal interest in their learning English. This study was conducted in a qualitative study that involved the nature of the qualitative study in nature. The findings of the study indicated that (1) the students’ were adolescents that were ready and conscious to get the lesson, (2) the students felt that they did not have good English mastery, (3) the students’ motivation in learning individually was not as high as learning in groups though they realized that they needed to master the target language, and (4) the students’ preferred to have more topics on Islamic values and functions in English and teacher’s roles are planner, information provider, and resource developer.
This study investigates the culture-based instructional materials (C-BIM) model to improve students’ reading and writing skills viewed from critical thinking skills at the junior-high-school in Indonesia. This study is a mixed-method employing the explanatory sequential design. The data are in the form of quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data are collected first and followed by the quantitative one. The research instruments are in the form of reading and writing tests, questionnaires, and interview sheets. The test is used to see the students’ reading and writing achievements. Meanwhile, the questionnaire is utilized to determine the students’ and teachers’ intercultural awareness and perception of incorporating cultures in teaching materials. The data of reading-writing achievement are analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Thus, the data of students’ and teachers’ cultural awareness and perception are gained by applying qualitative steps: analysis, reduction, coding, interpretation, and conclusion. Based on the result of the research, this study indicates that the C-BIM model significantly affects students’ reading and writing skills. Also, it has an interaction between teaching materials and critical thinking skills. Researchers elaborate on those in the discussion part of this article regarding the students' intercultural competence and perception.
Pertumbuhan dan perkembangan anak dipengaruhi oleh banyak faktor diantaranya kesehatan dan gizi. Apabila gizi yang diasup oleh tubuh tidak mencukupi maka hal tesebut akan menyebabkan pertumbuhan dan perkembangan janin menjadi terhambat. Stunting merupakan dampak gizi buruk yang menyebabkan tidak optimalnya pertumbuhan dan perkembangan anak. Melalui kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PKM) berupa kegiatan Brainstorming terkait stunting dilakukan dengan metode learning by doing. Peserta sosialisasi merupakan orang tua (Ibu) dan peserta didik PAUD Sultan Qaimudin Kendari yang bersedia dilibatkan dalam proses pengabdian secara tatap muka, terbatas dan memaksimalkan penerapan protokol kesehatan karena pengabdian ini dilaksanakan di masa pandemi covid-19. Ruang lingkup kegiatan meliputi sosialisasi pengetahuan teoretis bagi Ibu, pengukuran tinggi dan berat badan anak serta kolaborasi peserta (Ibu dan anak) dalam menyusun menu makanan dengan gizi lengkap dan seimbang. Sebagai salah satu target luaran yang dihasilkan dari PkM ini yaitu Hand Book bekal sehat, murah dan bergizi, maka dapat direkomendasikan kepada orang tua maupun guru agar dapat menggunakannya sebagai alternatif acuan dalam menyediakan bekal bergizi bagi anak.
Remaja adalah aset bangsa yang nantinya akan melanjutkan cita-cita perjuangan bangsa Indonesia. Masa remaja disebut sebagai masa yang penuh dengan konflik, dimana pada masa tersebut mudah terjadi konflik akibat perubahan pertumbuhan dan perkembangan serta tuntutan adaptasi dari usia remaja. Tugas perkembangan usia remaja disebut sebagai tahap identitas diri. Remaja yang berhasil mencapai tugas perkembangan akan memperoleh pencapaian identitas diri, sebaliknya apabila remaja mengalami kegagalan dalam mencapai tugas perkembangannya maka akan terjadi kebingungan peran yang berdampak pada perubahan perilaku yang menyimpang, seperti melakukan kegiatan kriminal, memobolos, tawuran yang dapat dipandang sebagai bentuk kenakalan remaja oleh masyarakat. Sekolah sebagai wahana pendidikan formal melalui kegiatan UKS dapat mengaplikasikan berbagai metode untuk memberikan pemahaman dan pengetahuan terkait optimalisasi pencapaian tugas perkembangan usia remaja di sekolah salah satunya dengan memberikan edukasi kesehatan tentang tugas perkembangan usia remaja melalui pedekatan CMHN pilar yang ke-4 yakni manajemen kasus. Kegiatan pengabdian dilakukan di SMP Negeri 2 Bondoala kecamatan Morosi Kabupaten Konawe dengan jumlah peserta sebanyak 48 siswa yang berusia 12-18 tahun. Alat ukur berupa kuesioner 10 pertanyaan yang menggambarkan pengetahuan tentang tugas perkembangan usia remaja. Data di analisis dengan menggunakan uji Paired T-Test. Hasil yang diperoleh menunjukkan bahwa terdapat peningkatan pengetahuan yang signifikan tentang tugas perkembangan usia remaja setelah diberikan Edukasi pada siswa/i SMP Negeri 2 Bondoala. Diharapkan kegiatan ini dapat berkelanjutan melalui monitoring dan evaluasi oleh penanggung jawab UKS bekerjasama dengan lintas sektor dalam hal ini Penanggung jawab UKS Puskesmas Sampara terkait optimalisasi pencapaian tugas perkembangan usia remaja
