Correction of errors in media reporting is essential to address damages, maintain credibility, protect independence, and fulfill societal functions. The media in liberal democracies correct very few errors and reluctantly make them. The digital media and the “fake news” syndrome have exacerbated the already complex professional and ethical issues of correction. Theory construction and research on these issues are sporadic, limited, and lacking depth. Professional and ethical codes are deficient and not sufficiently enforced. Future research should focus on both correction and prevention.
