As tourism becomes one of the industries generating huge revenue for the governments of many countries, Nigeria is yet to follow suit with many man-made and natural tourist attractions suffering from wanton neglect. This study examined the security implications of neglecting tourism in Nigeria with specific focus on Zuma Rock. Media reports examined revealed that the vicinity of the rock, being too uncared for, aids the occurrence of criminal acts such as armed robbery, bike snatching, drug dealing, sexual assaults and murder. A total of 384 respondents across five communities surrounding the Zuma Rock were surveyed. The study found that the residents of the communities live in fear due to not only the prevalence of violent crimes in the vicinity of the rock but also lack of belief in the effort of the formal social control agents. It is therefore recommended that the government should develop the destination while the residents should develop effective informal social control methods.
