This paper provides a systematic review of published research on lean logistics, green logistics and the combination of both paradigms. Although prior research on all three topics exists, only a few have focused on the field of logistics as such. The present analysis comprises an examination of 98 scientific articles from 35 international journals, published between the years 1994 and 2015. The published studies are classified by next divisions: journal, paradigm, time distribution, research stream and sector-wise focus.Although key findings indicate that over the last couple of years research on all three topics has increased, a research gap regarding the studies of lean and green logistics when combined, has been identified. For all three topics the domination in research typology has been extracted. The findings indicate that most papers examined on the topic of lean logistics come from the manufacturing industries, whereas for the topic green logistics and a combination of green and lean topics no specific sector was identified. Deriving from insights gained in a concrete empirical quantitative modelling research, the aim of the paper is to present the methodology and results of a Packaging Waste (PW) logistics exploratory study that was conducted in cooperation with a leading southeastern European retail chain company. PW Reverse Logistics (RL) is specific, but an integral part of retail operations and can also represent significant logistics and transportation costs concerns. In our research, we have, with a simulation model, been able to reduce the number of tonne-kilometres for 55% which represents significant cost reduction. The study scope focuses on the RL of industrial PW as the handling object of interest in retail, decoupled from the possible returns flow of non-food items and waste generated on premise by shoppers and employees, classified as non-industrial. It introduces an analytical framework, which has been tested and applied to a real case problem.
Industrial packaging waste as an object of reverse logistics has nowadays from environmental and cost perspective become a huge task especially in retail. In addition to that most costs come from transportation, which if not rationalized leads to negative environmental impacts. The research consists out of two parts, where the first part provides an overview of domestic and foreign literature in the field of environmental impacts caused by transportation of packaging waste in retail and, the second part is an analysis of packaging waste transportation in the largest Slovenian retailer. Finally, the findings and suggestions are presented. In this analysis we wanted to put forward any potential solutions that could improve the existing system environmental performance, by reducing environmental impacts. A conclusion of our analysis has shown that with system reorganization we could significantly reduce the amount of tonne kilometres by 55 % and therefore lower the fuel emissions.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
