The volatile constituents from leaves of endemic Scutellaria havanensis Jacq. in Cuba was studied by hydrodestillation and GC-MS. Twenty-five compounds were identified, of which the most prominent were β-caryophyllene (75.6 %), α-humulene (11.6 %) and Caryophyllene oxide (2.6 %).
Brew from flowers of Malvaviscus penduliflorus Cav (family Malvaceae) are used as sedativein Cuba, where this species is popularly known as "pasiflora". Until present, only a phytochemical screening of the aqueous extracts from flowers and leaves of this plant has been carried out. In such work saponines, sugars, alkaloids and flavonoids were identified. However, no report on its non-polar extract had been published, in which other bioactive compounds could be present. Taking into account these facts, the aim of this work was to study the composition of the hexanic extract of the M. penduliflorus flowers by GC-MS. Dried flowers were extracted in a Soxhlet apparatus with hexane during eight hours. Samples were dissolved in chloroform and derivatized with MSTFA. The extraction yielded 2.2 % and the obtained extract was a yellow pale solid. This extract was mainly composed of hydrocarbons (C9-C32, including squalene); fatty acids (C9:0-C30:0); sterols and fatty alcohols (C26OH-C32OH). This study is a contribution to the chemical composition knowledge of these flowers and could support the pharmacological properties as well as the safety of their extracts. To our knowledge, this is the first report about the chemical study of the apolar extract from the flowers of this plant grown in Cuba.
