Anthropogenic mortality of wildlife is typically inferred from measures of the absolute decline in population numbers. However, increasing evidence suggests that indirect demographic effects including changes to the age, sex, and social structure of populations, as well as the behavior of survivors, can profoundly impact population health and viability. Specifically, anthropogenic mortality of wildlife (especially when unsustainable) and fragmentation of the spatial distribution of individuals (homeranges) could disrupt natal dispersal mechanisms, with long-term consequences to genetic structure, by compromising outbreeding behavior and gene flow. We investigate this threat in African leopards (Panthera pardus pardus), a polygynous felid with male-biased natal dispersal. Using a combination of spatial (home-range) and genetic (21 polymorphic microsatellites) data from 142 adult leopards, we contrast the structure of two South African populations with markedly different histories of anthropogenically linked mortality. Home-range overlap, parentage assignment, and spatio-genetic autocorrelation together show that historical exploitation of leopards in a recovering protected area has disrupted and reduced subadult male dispersal, thereby facilitating opportunistic male natal philopatry, with sons establishing territories closer to their mothers and sisters. The resultant kin-clustering in males of this historically exploited population is comparable to that of females in a well-protected reserve and has ultimately led to localized inbreeding. Our findings demonstrate novel evidence directly linking unsustainable anthropogenic mortality to inbreeding through disrupted dispersal in a large, solitary felid and expose the genetic consequences underlying this behavioral change. We therefore emphasize the importance of managing and mitigating the effects of unsustainable exploitation on local populations and increasing habitat fragmentation between contiguous protected areas by promoting in situ recovery and providing corridors of suitable habitat that maintain genetic connectivity. Conservation translocations have become an important management tool, particularly for large wildlife species such as the lion (Panthera leo). When planning translocations, the genetic background of populations needs to be taken into account; failure to do so risks disrupting existing patterns of genetic variation, ultimately leading to genetic homogenization, and thereby reducing resilience and adaptability of the species. We urge wildlife managers to include knowledge of the genetic background of source/target populations, as well as species‐wide patterns, in any management intervention. We present a hierarchical decision‐making tool in which we list 132 lion populations/lion conservation units and provide information on genetic assignment, uncertainty and suitability for translocation for each source/target combination. By including four levels of suitability, from ‘first choice’ to ‘no option’, we provide managers with a range of options. To illustrate the extent of international trade of lions, and the potential disruption of natural patterns of intraspecific diversity, we mined the CITES Trade Database for estimated trade quantities of live individuals imported into lion range states during the past 4 decades. We identified 1056 recorded individuals with a potential risk of interbreeding with wild lions, 772 being captive‐sourced. Scoring each of the records with our decision‐making tool illustrates that only 7% of the translocated individuals were ‘first choice’ and 73% were ‘no option’. We acknowledge that other, nongenetic factors are important in the decision‐making process, and hence a pragmatic approach is needed. A framework in which source/target populations are scored based on suitability is not only relevant to lion, but also to other species of wildlife that are frequently translocated. We hope that the presented overview supports managers to include genetics in future management decisions and contributes towards conservation of the lion in its full diversity.
Understanding a species’ diet can be critical for effective conservation. While several traditional methods for assessing raptor diet exist, many pose inherit biases and often require extensive fieldwork that can limit sample sizes and the geographic scope of studies. This is especially true for species that nest at low densities (e.g., large eagles). Recently, several studies have demonstrated the value of web-sourced photographs in tackling ecological and evolutionary questions. Specialized software (e.g., MORPHIC) has been developed to systematically extract Google Images for this purpose. We used this approach to explore the diet of Martial Eagles (Polemaetus bellicosus). A shortage of prey is one of the proposed hypotheses for recent population declines across their range. Of the 4,872 photographs selected by MORPHIC, 254 were usable (5%). Birds, mammals, and reptiles each contributed similarly to overall identified prey. Helmeted Guineafowl (Numida meleagris) were the most important bird prey identified (12% of overall prey). The 4 most important mammalian prey species were Thompson’s gazelle (Eudorcas thomsonii; 5%), impala (Aepyceros melampus; 4%), common duiker (Sylvicapra grimmia; 4%), and banded mongoose (Mungos mungo; 4%). Reptile prey was dominated by monitor lizards (Varanus spp.; 21%). Prey class proportions differed significantly by regions with mammalian prey being more common in eastern Africa and reptile prey being more common in southern Africa. Within South Africa, reptile prey proportion was greater in the east than in the west. These corroborate existing prey composition studies. Prey composition differed between age classes, with adult eagles preying on more birds than non-adults. There was no significant difference in the average estimated prey weight by eagle age or feeding position (ground, perched, or flying). Our results suggest that this approach may offer a useful method to explore the diet for raptor species that are well photographed across their range, at minimal cost and research effort.
Despite having protected status, poaching for the illegal trade and traditional use remains a primary threat to leopards (Panthera pardus) across southern Africa. Addressing this threat is challenging, not only because it is difficult to uncover and monitor illicit behavior, but because law enforcement and alternative intervention strategies need to account for cultural and political sensitivities to prove effective and sustainable. With up to 4 million followers in southern Africa, the recently-established Nazareth Baptist "Shembe" Church represents the principal culturo-religious use of illegal leopard skins in the world. This longitudinal study used in-person questionnaires (n = 8,600) and telephone follow-ups (n = 2,300) with Shembe followers to explore socioeconomic and experiential factors related to the desirability and possession of illegal leopard skins before and after receiving a faux alternative through the Furs for Life (FFL) intervention program. Proportional possession of authentic skins was relatively low among followers who received faux skins (21%), with declines of 7 and 13% in subsequent authentic skin acquisition and desirability, respectively. Logistic regression models revealed that authentic skin possession, both before and after receiving a faux skin, was primarily related to employment status. Desire for authentic skins increased with recipient age, but decreased with improved knowledge of leopard population status since receiving the faux skin. Followers who were dissatisfied with faux skins were likely to express a continued desire for authentic skins. Most followers (95%) were, however, satisfied with the faux alternative, having retained and worn it at gatherings, with little noticeable damage or perceived societal judgment. These results support the FFL intervention as a means of protecting leopards: Although authentic skins were still acquired, demand decreased significantly over 3 years with shifts in perception favoring faux leopard skin alternatives.
