The aim of this study was to investigate the genetic diversity within and among three breeds of sheep: Corriedale, Merino and Creole. Sheep from the three breeds (Merino n = 110, Corriedale n = 108 and Creole n = 10) were genotyped using the Illumina Ovine SNP50 beadchip ® . Genetic diversity was evaluated by comparing the minor allele frequency (MAF) among breeds. Population structure and genetic differentiation were assessed using STRUCTURE software, principal component analysis (PCA) and fixation index (F ST ). Fixed markers (MAF = 0) that were different among breeds were identified as specific breed markers. Using a subset of 18,181 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), PCA and STUCTURE analysis were able to explain population stratification within breeds. Merino and Corriedale divergent lines showed high levels of polymorphism (89.4% and 86% of polymorphic SNPs, respectively) and moderate genetic differentiation (F ST = 0.08) between them. In contrast, Creole had only 69% polymorphic SNPs and showed greater genetic differentiation from the other two breeds (F ST = 0.17 for both breeds). Hence, a subset of molecular markers present in the OvineSNP50 is informative enough for breed assignment and population structure analysis of commercial and Creole breeds.
Growth curves are useful for describing the sigmoid shape of an animal's weight pattern over time. The purpose of the present study was to describe, for the first time, a complete growth curve for pasture-fed Angus cows in Uruguay and to analyze the major fixed effects that affect the estimation of mature cow weight (CW). A total of 22,743 records from 5,284 cows belonging to 73 herds were used in the statistical analysis. Five nonlinear models (Brody, Gompertz, Von Bertalanffy, logistic, and Richards) and a 3-knot cubic spline function were fitted to model weight change across age. Body weights were recorded at birth, weaning, and 18 mo and as an adult (at 2.3-3.6, 3.6-4.6, 4.6 to 5.6, 5.6 to 6.6, and 6.6 to 8.1 yr). After preliminary analyses, the fixed effects included in the model to estimate CW were BCS, herd, year and month of measurement, and age of dam. The herd and BCS were the major significant sources of variation. The Richards model had the lowest values for Akaike information criterion, Bayesian information criterion, and -2 log likelihood, with the asymptotic weight being 542 kg. The spline function was the model that fitted the data most closely to the observed weights followed by the Richards function. The Richards model gave better predictions of weights from birth to maturity than the other 4 nonlinear models, because these functions were shown to over- or underestimate weights at different ages in this beef cattle data set. The predicted curve showed that cows reach mature CW after 5 yr of age, which is the age commonly assumed as adult weight in beef cattle. Results form this analysis allowed the estimation of CW and rate of maturing and to take knowledge of the shape of growth curve for Angus females in Uruguay under extensive conditions, helping breeders to take selection decisions. In this way, breeders can optimize the management and efficiency for each production system.
Disease caused by gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) is one of the main constraints for sheep production worldwide. Although adult categories are more resistant to GIN, a temporary loss of acquired immunity is presented around parturition, which results in the so-called "periparturient rise" (PPR) in fecal excretion of GIN eggs. The objective of the present work was to study the dynamic of the PPR and to model the faecal worm egg count (FEC) curve during the periparturient period in Uruguayan Merino sheep. Faecal samples were collected from lambing ewes during 2009 and 2010 parturitions. FEC and infective larvae cultures of each sampling were recorded. A total of 2,121 records from 748 ewes, the progeny of 107 sires, were used in the statistical analysis. FEC data were normalized using two logarithmic transformations: Log FEC = Log e (FEC + 100) and Log FEC_st (Log FEC with the variance standardized within contemporary group). Three functions were compared to shape the PPR curve. Haemonchus spp. was the most prevalent parasite. Log FEC_st was the selected response variable of the model, for its better adjustment to a normal distribution and a more homogeneous residual variance. The fixed regression model with Legendre polynomials was the selected one, based on the selection model criteria (Akaike & Schwarz Bayesian Information Criteria). The highest egg output was observed between two and four weeks post-lambing. In conclusion, the PPR observed in Uruguayan Merino lambing ewes had the maximum egg output matched with the milk production peak.Additional key words: gastrointestinal nematodes; Haemonchus contortus; lambing ewes; periparturient rise. Si bien los adultos son más resistentes a los GIN, una pérdida temporal de la inmunidad adquirida se presenta en el período del periparto, resultando en el "alza de lactación" (PPR) en la eliminación de huevos de GIN (HPG). El objetivo del presente trabajo fue estudiar la dinámica del PPR y obtener la curva del recuento del HPG durante el periparto en ovejas Merino uruguayo. Se recogieron muestras de heces de ovejas en las pariciones 2009 y 2010, realizándose HPG y coprocultivo de cada muestreo. Para el análisis estadístico se utilizaron 2,121 datos de 748 ovejas, hijas de 107 padres. Se llevaron a cabo dos transformaciones logarítmicas de manera que los datos siguieran una distribución normal: Log HPG = Log e (HPG+100) y Log HPG_st (Log HPG con la varianza normalizada dentro del grupo contemporáneo). Se compararon tres funciones para modelar la curva del PPR. Haemonchus spp. fue el género más frecuente.
