The Indoor Positioning and Indoor Navigation (IPIN) conference holds an annual competition in which indoor localization systems from different research groups worldwide are evaluated empirically. The objective of this competition is to establish a systematic evaluation methodology with rigorous metrics both for real-time (on-site) and post-processing (off-site) situations, in a realistic environment unfamiliar to the prototype developers. For the IPIN 2018 conference, this competition was held on September 22nd, 2018, in Atlantis, a large shopping mall in Nantes (France). Four competition tracks (two on-site and two off-site) were designed. They consisted of several 1 km routes traversing several floors of the mall. Along these paths, 180 points were topographically surveyed with a 10 cm accuracy, to serve as ground truth landmarks, combining theodolite measurements, differential global navigation satellite system (GNSS) and 3D scanner systems. 34 teams effectively competed. The accuracy score corresponds to the third quartile (75 th percentile) of an error metric that combines the horizontal positioning error and the floor detection. The best results for the on-site tracks showed an accuracy score of 11.70 m (Track 1) and 5.50 m (Track 2), while the best results for the off-site tracks showed an accuracy score of 0.90 m (Track 3) and 1.30 m (Track 4). These results showed that it is possible to obtain high accuracy indoor positioning solutions in large, realistic environments using wearable light-weight sensors without deploying any beacon. This paper describes the organization work of the tracks, analyzes the methodology used to quantify the results, reviews the lessons learned from the competition and discusses its future.
Grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) currently includes thousands of cultivars. Discrimination between these varieties, historically done by ampelography, is done in recent decades mostly by genetic analysis. However, when aiming to identify archaeobotanical remains, which are mostly charred with extremely low genomic preservation, the application of the genomic approach is rarely successful. As a result, variety-level identification of most grape remains is currently prevented. Because grape pips are highly polymorphic, several attempts were made to utilize their morphological diversity as a classification tool, mostly using 2D image analysis technics. Here, we present a highly accurate varietal classification tool using an innovative and accessible 3D seed scanning approach. The suggested classification methodology is machine-learning-based, applied with the Iterative Closest Point (ICP) registration algorithm and the Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) technique. This methodology achieved classification results of 91% to 93% accuracy in average when trained by fresh or charred seeds to test fresh or charred seeds, respectively. We show that when classifying 8 groups, enhanced accuracy levels can be achieved using a "tournament" approach. Future development of this new methodology can lead to an effective seed classification tool, significantly improving the fields of archaeobotany, as well as general taxonomy.
Space weather phenomena such as solar flares have a massive destructive power when they reach a certain magnitude. Here, we explore the deep-learning approach in order to build a solar flare-forecasting model, while examining its limitations and feature-extraction ability based on the available Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) X-ray time-series data. We present a multilayer 1D convolutional neural network to forecast the solar flare event probability occurrence of M- and X-class flares at 1, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hr time frames. The forecasting models were trained and evaluated in two different scenarios: (1) random selection and (2) chronological selection, which were compared afterward in terms of common score metrics. Additionally, we also compared our results to state-of-the-art flare-forecasting models. The results indicates that (1) when X-ray time-series data are used alone, the suggested model achieves higher score results for X-class flares and similar scores for M-class as in previous studies. (2) The two different scenarios obtain opposite results for the X- and M-class flares. (3) The suggested model combined with solely X-ray time-series fails to distinguish between M- and X-class magnitude solar flare events. Furthermore, based on the suggested method, the achieved scores, obtained solely from X-ray time-series measurements, indicate that substantial information regarding the solar activity and physical processes are encapsulated in the data, and augmenting additional data sets, both spatial and temporal, may lead to better predictions, while gaining a comprehensive physical interpretation regarding solar activity. Wireless computer network (WLAN)-based building-level positioning coupled with cellular information is thoroughly investigated in literature. This paper introduces a framework for accurate indoor positioning system (IPS) and navigation, which outperforms known algorithms. The main idea is to use a modified particle filter with weights computed as a function of radio frequency (RF) finger-printing, odometry, visual landmarks, and map constraints. Visual landmarks are extracted using a low resolution camera to track dominant landmarks such as lights. We demonstrate the efficiency of this framework on an Android-based mobile device on various indoor scenes with some prior knowledge. Our method allows a robust positioning compared with other systems evaluated under the same conditions, at 30 Hz and with a fairly low energy consumption.NAVIGATION. 2019;66:633-642.wileyonlinelibrary.com/journal/navi
