This chapter begins with concepts of documentary information on the academic entrepreneur as an actor in economic and social development, and the contribution that this makes in the processes of business alternatives and labor insertion, promoting technological development and scientific knowledge. The qualities and characteristics of the entrepreneur in universities are mentioned, highlighting aspects such as flexibility of ideas, vision in improving business, entrepreneurial spirit, adaptability to changes, agile thinking when making decisions and acting within the framework of professional ethics.
The last few years have been significant for "the creation of new companies carried out by researchers that have as a mechanism to generate value through scientific research known as university spin-off" (Castillo-Vergara & Alvarez-Marin, 2015, p. 2). According to Law 1838 of 2017: "A spin-off is understood as a company based on knowledge, especially that protected by intellectual property rights, generated within the scope of HEIs, resulting from research and development activities carried out under their support, in their laboratories and facilities or by researchers linked to them, among other forms" (p. 1). In order to approach the chapter, a documentary analysis was made that is related to the entrepreneur, his profile, his characteristics, motivation and emotional intelligence, previous aspects that must be recognized at the moment of wishing to work by his own means. The chapter takes into account the topic of spinoffs that arise as entrepreneurship and become knowledge transfer systems, as well as business development. (Bravo et al., 2019).
