Aspergillus niger is an opportunistic human pathogen and a strong air pollutant. A study was conducted with 75 different essential oils for the inhibition of hyphal growth and spore formation in Aspergillus niger. Cinnamomum zeylanicum (bark), Cinnamomum zeylanicum (leaf), Cinnamomum cassia, Syzygium aromaticum and Cymbopogon citratus were the top five essential oils which demonstrated marked inhibitory effect against hyphal growth and spore formation of A. niger. The chemical composition of these five most active essential oils was investigated by gas chromatography-mass spectra (GC-MS). Most of the other essential oils were found challenging to combat A. niger, suggesting their use as strong aroma therapeutic agents.
Plants have capability to optimize its architecture by using CDK pathways. It involves diverse types of cyclin dependent kinase enzymes (CDKs). CDKs are classified in to eight classes (CDKA to CDKG and CKL) based on the recognized cyclin-binding domains. These enzymes require specific cyclin proteins to get activated. They form complex with cyclin subunits and phosphorylate key target proteins. Phosphorylation of these target proteins is essential to drive cell cycle further from one phase to another phase. During cell division, the activity of cyclin dependent kinase is controlled by CDK interactor/inhibitor of CDKs (ICK ) and Kip-related proteins (KRPs). They bind with specific CDK/cyclin complex and help in controlling CDKs activity. Since cell cycle can be progressed further only by synthesis and destruction of cyclins, they are quickly degraded using ubiquitination-proteasome pathway. Ubiquitylation reaction is followed by DNA duplication and cell division process. These two processes are regulated by two complexes known as Skp1/cullin/F-box (SCF)-related complex and the anaphase-promoting complex/cyclosome (APC/C). SCF allows cell to enter from G1 to S phase and APC/C allows cell to enter from G2 to M phase. When all these above processes of cell division are going on, genes of cyclin dependent kinases gets activated one by one simultaneously and help in regulation of CDK pathways. How cell cycle is regulated by CDKs is discussed.
Biological diversity is depleting at an alarming rate. Additionally, a vast amount of biodiversity still remains undiscovered. Taxonomy has been serving the purpose of describing, naming, and classifying species for more than 250 years. DNA taxonomy and barcoding have accelerated the rate of this process, thereby providing a tool for conservation practice. DNA barcoding and traditional taxonomy have their own inherent merits and demerits. The synergistic use of both methods, in the form of integrative taxonomy, has the potential to contribute to biodiversity conservation in a pragmatic timeframe and overcome their individual drawbacks. In this review, we discuss the basics of both these methods of biological identification (traditional taxonomy and DNA barcoding), the technical advances in integrative taxonomy, and future trends. We also present a comprehensive compilation of published examples of integrative taxonomy that refer to nine topics within biodiversity conservation. Morphological and molecular species limits were observed to be congruent in ∼41% of the 58 source studies. The majority of the studies highlighted the description of cryptic diversity through the use of molecular data, whereas research areas like endemism, biological invasion, and threatened species were less discussed in the literature.
Plants dwelling at the base of biological food chain are of fundamental significance in providing solutions to some of the most daunting ecological and environmental problems faced by our planet. The reductionist views of molecular biology provide only a partial understanding to the phenotypic knowledge of plants. Systems biology offers a comprehensive view of plant systems, by employing a holistic approach integrating the molecular data at various hierarchical levels. In this review, we discuss the basics of systems biology including the various 'omics' approaches and their integration, the modeling aspects and the tools needed for the plant systems research. A particular emphasis is given to the recent analytical advances, updated published examples of plant systems biology studies and the future trends.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
