After an accelerator is operational, the simulation models, used in the design phase to study perfect linacs or those with random errors, can be specialized to study the behavior of the actual machine and optimize its performance. This is being done on the Alvarez linac at LAMPF using the PARMILA model. We have incorporated as many of the actual measured physical parameters as possible into the code, and have found it necessary to include a more comprehensive treatment of the beam dynamics to make the model and experimental observations agree. For example, it is necessary to consider longitudinal and transverse phase space together in the calculations. This report outlines the modifications to the model, the results of experiments that indicate the validity of the model, and use of the model to optimize the longitudinal tuning of the Alvarez linac. picture in Fig. 4. The derivative of the left edge gives the phase profile of the bunch. 88 39 90 91 92 93 94 99 9C
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
