Tourism is considered as an important economic activity around the world due to its direct economic impact as well as it is significant indirect and induced impacts. Granting to the World Travel and Tourism Council, Travel and Tourism Industry is one of the world's most significant economic sectors accounting for 10.4% of global GDP and 313 million jobs, or 9.9% of total employment, in 2017. The direct and indirect impact of the industry on real estate development in the world is tremendous in terms of accommodation, catering to food and beverages, leisure, pleasure and relaxation. In Sri Lanka, tourism is the third-largest export earner in the economy, and during the past five years, there has been an unprecedented growth in the industry. However, it is only through the right policies and investment decisions; Sri Lanka can leverage the economic prospects of the Travel and Tourism Industry. This study analyses the importance of the Travel and Tourism Industry in terms of real estate development. It reviews significant trends that are shaping the growth and development of the Travel and Tourism Industry in Sri Lanka and aim to produce useful inputs for policy implications. The analysis is based on modified Tourism Satellite Account: Recommended Methodological Framework 2008 published by World Travel and Tourism Council, and carried out analysing both academic and non-academic publications, including published journal articles, annual and quarterly reports published by United Nations' World Tourism Organization, World Travel and Tourism Council, World Economic Forum and Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority and through the raw data obtained by World Travel and Tourism Council for Sri Lanka. As per the analysis, the future outlook is bright for the tourism sector in Sri Lanka, and the country is expected to maintain a high rate of growth well into the next decade.
Local Authorities are in the lowest level administration structure in Sri Lanka. As enormous amount of literature suggest, service quality and beneficiaries satisfaction are very important concepts that local authorities must understand in order to remain efficient and effective. Accordingly, SERVQUAL is one of best models used in measuring level of service quality of local authorities. This paper aims to measure the satisfaction level of beneficiaries' in selected Urban Local Authorities in Colombo district using SERVQUAL model and describe how beneficiaries perceive service quality and whether they are satisfied with services offered by local authorities. Colombo Municipal Council (CMC), Dehivala Mount Lavinia MC, Mahagaragama UC and Boralesgamuwa UC limits were selected as sampling framework. Unit of analysis is beneficiaries and 50 beneficiaries were interviewed in each authority using seven point Likert scaled, self-administered questionnaire. Data was analyzed as per the SERVQUAL model with help of SPSS 20.0 package. Considering all aspects by which public are satisfied related to the services provided by the local authorities in selected sample, Maharagama UC is providing expected services as it is; with a small gap -0.02. Also CMC's gap -0.11 indicates a better sign of their services without having a large deviation from the expected level. However, Boralesgamuwa UC is the most inefficient services providing local authority which scores a 3.00 gap. As per the gap shows, Dehiwal Mt.Levenia is also slightly weak service providing local authority. However, further research on this area is required to verify the findings and find out the reasons/causes to the dissatisfaction (gap) of the people who look for services from Local Authorities in Sri Lanka.
After the civil war, the Sri Lankan government started the urban regeneration initiative focusing on Colombo city development. These projects have proved to be just immediate solutions, with no long-term effect on the community. Thus, this study examined the post-implementation issues of the Colombo urban regeneration project to develop a resolution framework. Subsequently, the study applied three similar cases viz., the Pruitt-Igoe, Chennai, and Kibera to understand the lessons and similar issues of urban regeneration projects such as social and cultural, economic, architectural, planning, and technical and management and operational that supported to develop the resolution model. The empirical analysis was based on a mixed-method approach with perceptions of low-income dwellers and professionals. Hence, the study concludes that social, cultural, and economic issues are most critical in Sri Lankan, similar to the other Asian studies. However, the post-implementation impacts of urban regeneration on the quality of life of urban poor have only received marginal attention and fewer successive policies in Sri Lanka.
Online education has automatically acquired a prime position in the education system as a new paradigm in the context of the present COVID pandemic. The efficacy of online education is determined by user satisfaction, which eventually increases users' intentions to continue with online education. This study involves assessing University lecturers' satisfaction towards the e-learning system as a mode of lecturing. An online questionnaire survey was conducted using a convenience sampling technique and 200 questionnaires were distributed among academics in all National Universities in Sri Lanka. One hundred twenty-eight (128) responses were collected within one week (response rate about 64%). The analysis explored descriptive statistics and variance-based structural equation modelling in Smart PLS. The findings revealed that the satisfaction of academics for e-teaching activities is positive and above average in terms of perceived usefulness, confirmation, task technology fit, system quality, information quality, and training dimensions. Finally, 88% of respondents have agreed with blended teaching methods in the future while recommending strategies for integrating a considerable array of technologies' capabilities in higher education institutions. The paper contributes to existing knowledge by considering the majority of factors and their impact on e-learning satisfaction. Also, it deliberates the issues and challenges academics face about e-learning mode and their future blended teaching recommendations.
