Genetic correlations between visual scores and carcass traits measured by real-time ultrasound in beef cattleAbstract -The aim of this work was to evaluate the genetic and phenotypic correlations between carcass traits measured by real-time ultrasound and by visual scores, in order to verify the effectiveness of these scores in determining muscularity and carcass fat. Carcass traits measured by real-time ultrasound were longissimus muscle area (LMA) and backfat thickness (BF), obtained between the 12 th and 13 th ribs, as well as the rump fat thickness (RF). The visual scores for the traits of body structure (E), precocity (P), and muscle (M) were evaluated individually. The genetic and phenotypic parameters were estimated by multivariate analysis, using restricted maximum likelihood methodology. The estimated genetic correlations between LMA and E, P and M were 0.54, 0.58 and 0.61, respectively, indicating that, in the long term, the use of LMA as a selection criterion might produce animals with higher visual scores. Similar genetic correlations were found between both subcutaneous fat measures (BF and RF) and P and M scores. However, genetic correlations between both subcutaneous fat measures and E were close to zero. The phenotypic correlations followed the same trends of their respective genetic correlations. These estimates indicate that the visual scores and LMA are, in part, determi...
The objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic variability of body composition traits measured by ultrasound, growth traits, and visual scores as well as their genetic associations in Nelore cattle. A total of 9,765, 13,285, 13,061, 12,811, 3,484, 3,484, 3,483, and 3,303 records of weight at time of ultrasound measure (W550), 12th-13th rib LM area (LMA), backfat thickness (BF), rump fat thickness (RF), visual scores for body structure (BS), finishing precocity (FP), muscling (MS), and sheath and navel characteristics (SN), respectively, were used. The model included contemporary group (defined as year and season of birth, sex, and management group) as a fixed effect and age of dam at calving and age of the animal (linear and quadratic effects) as covariates. The direct additive genetic effect was included as a random effect. The analyses also included 46,157 observations of BW adjusted to 120 d. The (co)variance components were estimated by the restricted maximum likelihood method using a multitrait animal model. Heritability estimates for W550, LMA, BF, RF, BS, FP, MS, and SN were 0.37 ± 0.030, 0.33 ± 0.03, 0.24 ± 0.02, 0.28 ± 0.03, 0.24 ± 0.04, 0.38 ± 0.05, 0.29 ± 0.05, and 0.38 ± 0.06, respectively. The estimated genetic correlations between visual scores and LMA were moderate and positive, ranging from 0.37 to 0.44. Similar results were obtained for the estimated genetic correlations between FP and MS with fat thickness measures (BF and RF). Low genetic correlations were estimated between SN and BS and between SN and the body composition traits, indicating that selection for body composition traits and BS will not affect sheath and navel size. The estimated genetic correlations between weight adjusted to 120 d of age (W120) and W550 and BS were high (0.87 and 0.91) and moderate with LMA (0.49 and 0.55), FP (0.37 and 0.41), and MS (0.47 and 0.55). The visual scores and ultrasound-measured body composition traits have enough genetic variation for selection purposes in Nelore cattle. Selection based on visual scores for body structure, finishing precocity and muscling should lead to desired changes in body composition albeit much more slowly than direct selection on those traits measured by ultrasound. Selection for heavier BW at early ages should lead to favorable changes in yearling LM area and visual scores.
Palavras-chave: avaliação visual, correlação genética, gado de corte, herdabilidade, Nelore, peso Genetic parameters estimates for visual scores and their association with body weight in beef cattleABSTRACT -It was evaluated 27,523 and 21,746 records on traits of conformation, finishing precocity and musculature measured at weaning and a year after weaning, respectively, for the estimation of (co)variance components among these traits, and between them and body weights at the same ages. The data were analyzed by employing an animal model with direct and maternal genetic effect and permanent maternal environment effect. Restricted maximum likelihood was employed for the estimation of genetic parameters. The heritability estimates of visual scores at weaning were 0.13, 0.25, 0.23 for conformation, finishing precocity, and musculature respectively. The heritability estimates of visual scores one year after weaning were greater: 0.24, 0.32 and 0.27 for conformation, finishing precocity, and musculature, respectively. The genetic correlations estimates among scores at the same ages were: 0.67 and 0.75 between conformation and finishing precocity; 0.61 and 0.71 between conformation and musculature; 0.95 and 0.95 between finishing precocity and musculature, considering weaning and one year further, respectively. The genetic correlations estimated between weaning weight and conformation, finishing precocity, and musculature, were 0.97, 0.67 and 0.62, respectively. The estimat...
In this study, Bayesian analysis under a threshold animal model was used to estimate genetic correlations between morphological traits (body structure, finishing precocity and muscling) in Nelore cattle evaluated at weaning and yearling. Visual scores obtained from 7651 Nelore cattle at weaning and from 4155 animals at yearling, belonging to the Brazilian Nelore Program, were used. Genetic parameters for the morphological traits were estimated by two-trait Bayesian analysis under a threshold animal model. The genetic correlations between the morphological traits evaluated at two ages of the animal (weaning and yearling) were positive and high for body structure (0.91), finishing precocity (0.96) and muscling (0.94). These results indicate that the traits are mainly determined by the same set of genes of additive action and that direct selection at weaning will also result in genetic progress for the same traits at yearling. Thus, selection of the best genotypes during only one phase of life of the animal is suggested. However, genetic differences between morphological traits were better detected during the growth phase to yearling. Direct selection for body structure, finishing precocity and muscling at only one age, preferentially at yearling, is recommended as genetic differences between traits can be detected at this age.
The aim of this study was to estimate the components of variance and genetic parameters for the visual scores which constitute the Morphological Evaluation System (MES), such as body structure (S), precocity (P) and musculature (M) in Nellore beef-cattle at the weaning and yearling stages, by using threshold Bayesian models. The information used for this was gleaned from visual scores of 5,407 animals evaluated at the weaning and 2,649 at the yearling stages. The genetic parameters for visual score traits were estimated through two-trait analysis, using the threshold animal model, with Bayesian statistics methodology and MTGSAM (Multiple Trait Gibbs Sampler for Animal Models) threshold software. Heritability estimates for S, P and M were 0.68, 0.65 and 0.62 (at weaning) and 0.44, 0.38 and 0.32 (at the yearling stage), respectively. Heritability estimates for S, P and M were found to be high, and so it is expected that these traits should respond favorably to direct selection. The visual scores evaluated at the weaning and yearling stages might be used in the composition of new selection indexes, as they presented sufficient genetic variability to promote genetic progress in such morphological traits.
