In water treatment systems for human consumption, unified process of coagulation-flocculation is one of the most important to remove colloids' high loads. The aim of this investigation was to assess the effectiveness of chitosan as a coagulant for the treatment of raw water from the middle basin of river Guatapuri; for this purpose the optimum dose of the organic polymer was determined in water with starting turbidity of 100 to 1500 NTU. The results obtained after processing were: for water with turbidity 1500 NTU and optimal dose 40 mg/l, the removals achieved until 99.9 % turbidity, while for water with initial turbidity of 100 NTU and optimum dosage of 20 mg/l thrown removal it was over 96 %. This research presents the chitosan as an effective process for the purification of raw water in lotic alternative sources. Key words: Raw water, Coagulation, Flocculation, Chitosan, Turbidity.
