In this paper, we summarize the diversity of Polyphysaceae species in Todos os Santos Bay, in the state of Bahia, Brazil. The last has a distribution extending to the southern Atlantic Ocean. Acetabularia myriospora was transferred to Parvocaulis (as P. myriosporus) on the basis of its short corrugated peduncles and lack of a lower corona in the gametangial ray discs, which are diagnostic characters of this genus. In Todos os Santos Bay, Acetabularia species are more widely distributed than are Parvocaulis species, which are currently restricted to Itaparica Island. The most common taxa were A. caliculus and A. schenckii, which were collected from the majority of the study sites. This paper provides detailed descriptions of the morphology, reproductive aspects and geographic distributions of the algae, as well as discussing the taxa studied.
We report here the results of a survey of the phytobenthos of Boipeba Island, Bahia state, Brazil. Samples were collected during three periods (July 2007 and March and December 2012) in the intertidal regions of offshore reefs near the beaches at Ponta dos Castelhanos, Bainema, Moreré, and Tassimirim. A total of 159 taxa were identified: Rhodophyta (83), Chlorophyta (52), Heterokontophyta/Phaeophyceae (21), Cyanobacteria (02), and Magnoliophyta (01). The most representative orders were Ceramiales (Rhodophyta), Bryopsidales (Chlorophyta), and Dictyotales (Heterokontophyta/Phaeophyceae) with 30, 23 and 15 taxa respectively; vouchers were deposited in the herbarium of the Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana (HUEFS). This work adds 150 new taxa to those already known for Boipeba Island, including Nitophyllum punctatum (Stackh. in With.) Grev., whose occurrence is now confirmed for the coast of Bahia. The number of species identified in this study was elevated in comparison with previous phytobenthos studies undertaken on Brazilian islands.
We report here the fi rst occurrence of Bangiopsis subsimplex (Mont.) F.Schmitz (Rhodophyta) for the northeastern coast of Brazil. Th e specimen was isolated from a laboratory sample of mollusk shells collected in Baía de Todos os Santos (Bimbarras Island, Brazil) and was held in sterilized seawater (33 UPS) enriched with 25% Provasoli solution. In the American Atlantic region, B. subsimplex presents a northern distribution limit at French Guiana and a southern limit at São Paulo. We conclude that the distribution of B. subsimplex has expanded, since the species was once known only to the southeastern Brazil, specifi cally to São Paulo.
Boodlea composita (Harv.) F.Brand (Chlorophyta) no litoral nordeste do Brasil
ABSTRACT(Boodlea composita (Harv.) F.Brand (Chlorophyta) in the northeastern coast of Brazil). Th is study reports the fi rst occurrence of Boodlea composita (Harv.) F.Brand (Chlorophyta) to the northeastern coast of Brazil and the second record for the Brazilian coast. Th e material was collected along the coast of Bahia (08º20'07"-18º20'07''S and 30º20'37"-46º36'59"W). Th e distribution of B. composita was expanded along the coast of Brazil, since this was known only to the Southeast, specifi cally to Cabo Frio, Rio de Janeiro. In American Atlantic, B. composita presents northern limit of distribution in Bermuda and southern limit at Rio de Janeiro.
