<p class="abstract"><strong>Background:</strong> Hearing in noise test (HINT) sentence test is one of adaptive speech in noise tests. It has been used in many clinical applications such as recording of speech perception threshold using sentences material in quiet and in noise and verifying the benefit from hearing-aid amplification and cochlear implants, especially in noise. The aim of the present study was to design and to develop and standardize an Arabic version of HINT sentences lists and also to apply HINT to subjects with SNHL.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Methods:</strong> Everyday sentences were used in an adaptive procedure to estimate the sentences speech recognition thresholds (sSRT) in quiet and noise; the material consisted of 28 phonemically balanced lists. This study included 150 normal hearing subjects and also 30 subjects with bilateral mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss. </p><p class="abstract"><strong>Results:</strong> The mean sSRT threshold in normal hearing subjects in quiet was 19 dB(A)±0.08 dB. The mean of S/N ratio at threshold in the noise 0° condition was -10.36 S/N ratio ± 0.58. The mean S/N ratio at threshold in the noise 90° condition was -10.45 S/N ratio ±0.41. While, the mean S/N ratio at threshold in the noise 270° condition was -11.69 S/N ratio ±1.70. As regards SNHL group, the mean of sSRT in quiet was 49.46 dB(A)±0.68 dB. The mean of S/N ratio at threshold was -7.69 S/N ratio ±0.68, -8.18±0.33 and -8.18±0.35 in the noise conditions 0°, 90° and 270° respectively.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Conclusions:</strong> The statistical reliability and efficiency of the test suit it to practical applications.</p>
Objectives Hearing in noise test (HINT) is used to evaluate and compare the performance of different hearing aid. This research was designed to compare the performance of a fixed directional microphone (FDM) and an automatic adaptive directional microphone (AADM) with different noise directions using aided Arabic HINT. Methods Control group (CG): 20 normal peripheral hearing adults. Study group (SG): 40 adults with bilateral symmetrical sensorineural hearing loss. Arabic HINT was performed in three noise situations at 0°, 90°, and 270° azimuths for both groups. For SG, test was done in 4 conditions: condition (I), without hearing aid; condition (II), aided response with omnidirectional microphone; condition (III), aided response with FDM; and condition (IV), aided response with AADM. Results For all azimuths, there was a statistically considerable difference between CG and SG in all conditions. Also, there was a statistically significant difference between SG conditions I and II and II and III. But no statistically significant difference was observed between conditions III and IV when the noise was at 90° and 270° azimuths. Conclusion AADM is the best choice of selection in hearing aid fitting, and it performs better in noise, especially when the noise and speech are in front of the patient.
Background Numerous infections can result in neurological symptoms, including anosmia, facial paralysis, and abrupt sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL). During the earlier SARS pandemic, coronaviruses were linked to a loss of smell and taste due to brain damage. Purpose To clinically detect corticosteroid treatment effectiveness in SSNHL post-COVID-19 infection and to detect the factors that affect the prognosis for these patients for better diagnosis and earlier management. Subjects and method Subjects included 20 subjects diagnosed by PCR as COVID-19 virus positive, complaining of sudden onset hearing loss post viral infection in different durations. All subjects had basic audiological evaluation done pre-treatment and repeated after 1 week, 2 weeks, and 1 month after treatment with methylprednisolone 21-acetate tablets. Results Onset of hearing loss post-COVID infection ranged from 1 to 3 months. As regards the improvement recognized with treatment course, thirteen patients (65%) of all twenty patients showed complete improvement at 1 month after starting treatment, and seven patients (35%) showed no improvement even after 1 month. Conclusion SSNHL has been widely recognized in the context of COVID-19 to date. Early corticosteroid therapy could help in the recovery of hearing, especially if the beginning of therapy was early in the first 2 weeks.

<p class="abstract"><strong>Background:</strong> Amblyaudia is a weakness in the listener’s binaural processing of auditory information. Subjects with amblyaudia also demonstrate binaural integration deficits and may display similar patterns in their evoked responses in terms of latency and amplitude of these responses. The purpose of this study was to identify the presence of amblyaudia in a population of young children subjects and to measure mismatch negativity (MMN), P300 and cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEPs) for those individuals.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Methods:</strong> Subjects included in this study were divided into 2 groups control group that consisted of 20 normal hearing subjects with normal developmental milestones and normal speech development. The study group (GII) consisted of 50 subjects with central auditory processing disorders (CAPDs) diagnosed by central auditory screening tests. </p><p class="abstract"><strong>Results:</strong> With using dichotic tests including dichotic digits test (DDT) and competing sentence test (CST), we could classify these cases into normal, dichotic dysaudia, amblyaudia, and amblyaudia plus with percentages (40%, 14%, 38%, 8% respectively). Using event related potentials, we found that P300 and MMN are more specific in detecting neurocognitive dysfunction related to allocation of attentional resources and immediate memory in these cases.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Conclusions:</strong> The presence of amblyaudia in cases of central auditory processing disorders (CAPDs) and event related potentials is an objective tool for diagnosis, prognosis and follow up after rehabilitation.</p>
