This research aimed to assess the levels of the environmental knowledge and attitude of the middle-school students in five prominent green schools in Indonesia and to determine the possible factors related to their achievements. The findings were very important in giving feedbacks of the implementation of environmental education in Indonesia, especially in the early educational level. This research relied on the qualitative paradigm. A total of 1203 middle-school students and five Science teachers were involved in the survey and interview. The data related to environmental knowledge and attitude were gathered using a valid and reliable instrument of the environmental-literacy test and a prominent closed-ended questionnaire measuring the levels of ecological paradigm, the New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) Instrument. The data were descriptively displayed using SPSS 17.0. The data related to the Science teachers' perceptions were gathered using in-depth-interview technique. Context analysis was used to draw the observed data to provide the explanation of the factors related to the achievement of the levels of students' knowledge and attitude. The results of the descriptive analysis showed that the participants possessed a low level of knowledge and a middle-ecological level of attitude. The lack of important environmental competencies enhancing environmentally-friendly attitude within the curriculum and poor active and contextual teaching-and-learning processes may be of important factors related to the students' low levels of knowledge and attitudes.
Environmental literacy is the most important and fundamental ability that a person must have in dealing with the 21st century. Wise decisions in utilizing the environment to meet the increasingly complex human needs in this century are needed. The Indonesian government has provided early Adiwiyata programs in junior high schools to empower environmental literacy. This study aims 1) to determine the implementation of the Adiwiyata program that runs in SMP N 2 Sragen; 2) to describe and analyze the role of science teachers in empowering environmental literacy of students in SMP N 2 Sragen on the environmental material. This research is a qualitative research with descriptive method. Research subjects were principals, teachers, and student representatives. Data collection is done by observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis used is descriptive analysis through triangulation of data sources. The results of the study show that schools have 3 ways of implementing environmental education including a vision mission that is environmentally sound, participatory activities, management of facilities and infrastructure. The role of the teacher in the learning process is still less than optimal. The learning process that emphasizes on empowering environmental literacy has not been explicitly integrated into the learning materials and materials. The recommendation for this study is that schools need to help teachers to develop learning tools and methods that facilitate students to effectively empower environmental literacy.
Environmental education is one way to empower the environment where literacy can support sustainable development programs known as Education for Sustainable Development (EfSD). This study aimed to analyze the environmental literacy indicators in the curriculum of middle schools. The lesson plan in the middle school became the main subject for document analysis. This research is evaluation research. The data were collected with non-test techniques in the form of interviews and documentation. Qualitative analysis in the form of a matrix became the instrument used to analyze the gap of the indicators of the ideal knowledge and those of the aktual knowledge. The results indicated that out of 20 aktual indicators, there were 10 irrelevant indicators with the ideal indicators according to the New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) and the ecological concept according to Lewinsohn. The gap between indicators of achieving environmental literacy can be overcome by substituting the overall ecological concept in the lesson plan for the environment-related material. The existence of a strong ecological concept is expected to be the initial provision for students to empower environmental literacy.
