Introduction. The objective of the presented research is to characterize hope in the situational dimension, i.e., health, in the patients with cancer in the terminal phase of the disease, being treated in hospices and palliative care centers. Hope is very important for all the patients, especially for patients with cancer in various phases of the disease. Giving up on oncologic therapy and causal treatment is often associated with a transition into palliative care. When death and a loss of values become a threat, the individual has got hope to rely on. Material and Methods. The study relies on the Test to Measure Hope in the Health Context (NCN-36) by B.L. Block. 246 patients in the terminal phase of cancer participated in the study. Results. The internal structure of hope of recovery in the patients’ group was varied. The patients showed low levels of hope of recovery since they do not believe in the effectiveness of treatment. They were also not convinced of the effectiveness of modifications in dieting, lifestyle, or the use of nonconventional medicine. They trusted the doctor in charge and were moderately satisfied with the therapy in use. The intensity of hope of recovery was on the low level in the patients in the terminal phase of cancer. Age, sex, place of living, and marital status had a significant influence on the level of hope of recovery. Variables such as living on one’s own or living with one’s family, socioeconomic status, education, or profession did not affect the level of hope of recovery. Conclusions. The presented results allowed as to conclude that the assessment of hope in terminally ill cancer patients can be considered as one of the important tools enabling the personalization and the improvement of palliative care.
Background: To explain the link between household finances and the quality of the relationship between married or cohabitating partners and their life satisfaction, the Family Stress Model (FSM) was used and placed within the theoretical framework of the Couples and Finances Theory (CFT). Methods: The measures used to examine the relationship between partners were the Financial Management Behaviour Scale, the Marriage Questionnaire (KDM-2) adapted to a version for cohabitating couples, The Shared Goals and Values Scale, Harsh Start-up Scale, and the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS). In order to find out the relationship between variables, artificial neural networks (ANN) were applied. The research was conducted on a sample of 500 couples living in Poland (384 married and 116 cohabitating couples). Results: The results indicate that overall life satisfaction is most influenced by fundamental, direct, current ways of dealing with the daily financial routine and by saving and investing behaviours. Credit management and insurance behaviours are the most important for the quality of the relationship between partners. Conclusions: The research shows that financial management behaviours have an impact on the quality of relationships as well as on the subjective well-being of people in a relationship, and their relationship dynamics. This finding may be used to highlight the psychological importance of financial management behaviours.
Sensory processing sensitivity (SPS) is a heritable trait and persons who are characterized by a high level of it are termed highly sensitive. The first and the most frequently used scale developed to measure high sensitivity is the Highly Sensitive Person Scale (HSPS), which has become increasingly popular and has been adapted to many languages in recent years. The present article forms a part of the publications which deal with the subject of tool adaptation and the exploration of their structure. participants and procedureThis article presents the results of research conducted on a Polish sample of emerging adults consisting of 470 persons. The aim of this study is to further analyse the psychometric properties of the HSPS, as well as to provide initial evidence for the properties of the scale on a Polish sample. The analyses conducted to date have been extend-ed and the item response theory (IRT) model has been included. Also, a proposal for a shortened scale is presented. resultsThe results show that the Polish version of the HSPS constitutes a reliable method whose validity is proven by correlations with the Pavlovian Temperament Survey as well as being a reliable measure of the SPS construct. conclusionsThe results obtained support the multi-factor structure of the scale. There is a need for further analysis of the cultural aspect in sensitivity studies as well as for exploring gender differences.
The aim of the study was to find out about the education in Polish schools of young people from Ukraine, who began to study there in connection with the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation on February 24, 2022. The research focuses on the educational processes themselves, both in terms of teaching, care and upbringing, as well as the broader conditions of these processes in the pedagogical, psychological and social perspective (as well as in the formal and legal context). The main research questions are as follows: 1. What are the previous experiences of schools and teachers in working with foreign children (including children from Ukraine)? What preparation of schools and teachers undertaken to admit children who came to Poland as a result of the outbreak of the war? 2. How is the process of educating children from Ukraine who came as a result of the war organized at the local level and at the level of specific schools? 3. How, in the opinion of teachers, are the relations between children who previously studied in Polish schools and children who came as a result of the war shaped? 4. How, in the opinion of teachers, is the mental functioning of children who came as a result of the outbreak? 5. What, in the opinion of teachers, are the relations between the families of students who came because of the war, and the families of children who previously studied in Polish schools like? 6. How, in the opinion of teachers, is the cooperation between schools and the families of children who came from Ukraine in connection with the outbreak of the war? 7. What aspects of educational work with children who came as a result of the outbreak of the war are difficult for teachers in Polish schools? The findings are interpreted in the context of describing the needs of Polish schools and teachers so that the educational process of young people with refugee experience from Ukraine is maximized and constitutes effective support for them in a crisis situation. The recommendations developed by the authors of the Report and a team of invited experts are both more general in nature, related to the philosophy, assumptions and principles of the support provided, and relate to specific substantive aspects of support that can be implemented in schools.
