73contain such material although in recent adoptions a few books with extensive emphasis upon the South have found favor. A steady stream of invaluable books and pamphlets about contemporary southern life comes from university and commercial presses, state and national governments, and civic agencies.Save for the negro slums, southern urban communities offer few conditions distinct from those of the rest of the nation to serve as community resources for the social studies. The rural schools, however, with their large proportion of "non-academic" students and inadequate libraries, must utilize a wide range of local conditions and activities, many of which are distinctive of the rural South. First among these resources are the many rural problems. Normal activities such as cotton production and marketing, rural electrification, local history, and the simple structure of local governments can also be used to enrich class-room instruction, as is shown by the program of the Ogeechee and Denmark white consolidated schools in Bulloch County, Georgia. Their social studies classes conducted community fact finding surveys and made field studies of a wide range of economic, social, and governmental activities in connection with their class work. The effects of this program upon the community, as in reducing the rate of hookworm infection, and in vitalizing student interest in the social studies have been significant. These presentations were followed by a stimulating discussion from the floor. High school teachers from the Memphis region attended this session in unusually large numbers.
