Data from the IMP-I satellite are used to determine the lag time between the response of the index of geomagnetic activity AE to fluctuations in the azimuthal component of the interplanetary electric field as measured in the solar ecliptic coordinate system. The lag time is found to lie in the range 30-50 min. The magnitude of the lag time is related to the average energy content of the magnetosphere.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
