Background Food safety and hygiene are currently a global health concern, especially in unindustrialized countries, as a result of increasing food-borne diseases (FBDs) and accompanying deaths. It has continued to be a critical problem for people, food companies, and food control officials in developed and developing nations. Objective The objective of the study was to assess food safety practices and associated factors among food handlers in food establishments in Mettu and Bedelle towns, south-west Ethiopia, 2022. Methods A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from February to March 2022, among 450 randomly selected food handlers working in food and drink establishments in Mettu and Bedelle towns, Southwest Ethiopia. Data was collected using an interviewer-administered structured questionnaire. The data was coded and entered into Epi Data version 3.1 before being exported to SPSS version 20 for analysis. Both bivariate and multivariable logistic regression models were fitted. An adjusted odds ratio and a 95% confidence level were estimated to assess the significance of associations. A p-value of < 0.05 was considered sufficient to declare the statistical significance of variables in the final model. Result A total of 450 food handlers participated in the study, making the response rate 99.3%. About 202 (44.9%) of respondents had poor practices in food safety. Lack of supervision (AOR = 6.2, 95% CI: 3.37, 11.39), absence of regular medical checkups (AOR = 1.98; 95% CI: 1.14, 3.43), lack of knowledge of food safety practices (AOR =2.32; 95% CI: 1.38, 3.89), availability of water storage equipment (AOR =0.37; CI: 0.21, 0.64), and unavailability of a refrigerator (AOR =0.24; 95% CI: 0.12) were factors significantly associated with food safety practices. Conclusion The level of poor food safety practices was remarkably high. Knowledge of food safety, medical checkups, service year as food handler, availability of water storage equipment, availability of refrigerator, and sanitary supervision were all significantly associated with food safety practice. Hence, great efforts are needed to improve food safety practices, and awareness should be created for food handlers on food safety.
Background A maternity waiting home is a temporary residence in which pregnant women from remote areas wait for their childbirth. It is an approach targeted to advance access to emergency obstetric care services especially, in hard-to-reach areas to escalate institutional delivery to reduce complications that occur during childbirth. Apart from the availability of this service, the intention of pregnant women to utilize the existing service is very important to achieve its goals. Thus, this study aimed to assess the intention to use maternity waiting homes and associated factors among pregnant women. Methods Community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 605 pregnant women using a multistage sampling technique from March 10 to April 10, 2019, by using a structured questionnaire through a face-to-face interview. The collected data was entered into Epi-Data version 3.1 and analyzed using the SPSS version 24 statistical package. Logistic regression analysis was used to test the association. All variables at p-value < 0.25 in bivariate analysis were entered into multivariate analysis. Lastly, a significant association was declared at a P-value of < 0.05 with 95% CI. Results In this study, the intention to use maternity waiting homes was 295(48.8%, 95%CI: 47%-55%)). Occupation (government employee) (AOR:2.87,95%CI: 1.54–5.36), previous childbirth history (AOR:2.1,95%CI:1.22–3.57), past experience in maternity waiting home use AOR:4.35,95%CI:2.63–7.18), direct (AOR:1.57,95%CI:1.01–2.47) and indirect (AOR: 2.18, 1.38,3.44) subject norms and direct (AOR:3.00,95%CI:2.03–4.43), and indirect (AOR = 1.84,95%CI:1.25–2.71) perceived behavioral control of respondents were significantly associated variables with intention to use maternity waiting home. Conclusion The magnitude of intention to use maternity waiting homes among pregnant women is low. Community disapproval, low self-efficacy, maternal employment, history of previous birth, and past experiences of MWHs utilization are predictors of intention to use MWHs, and intervention programs, such as health education, strengthening and integration of community in health system programs need to be provided.
Objectives: The aim of this review was to describe malnutrition and poor oral hygiene, the most common risk factors for noma. Methods: A vigorous literature searches were conducted on databases such as Scopus, Elsevier, Web of Science, PubMed, Virtual Health Library, and Google Scholar by inserting keywords such as ‘noma’ OR ‘cancrum oris’ OR ‘cancrum oris cases’. A total of 65 articles gathered. Of these, 38 articles found to be eligible for this study. Results: A total of 38 full-length articles were included in the review. According to the evidence gathered and summarized in this review, malnutrition, especially protein-energy malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies, makes the oral mucosa susceptible to opportunistic pathogens of noma, and then, in so doing, pathogens invade the oral cavities. Malnutrition has a bidirectional relationship with noma. Since noma is a disease of the oral cavity, poor oral hygiene has the potential of predispose and worsen the disease’s progress. Conclusion: Malnutrition and poor oral hygiene found to be ingrained in the pathogenesis of noma. For effective management and prevention of noma, it is necessary to underpin adequate nutritional supplementation (including vitamins). As a primary prevention strategy, healthcare workers’ training should be strengthened to improve the diagnosis and treatment of oral infections, including noma.
Objective: The study was aimed to assess the magnitude and associated factors of 2-year seizure-free status of epileptic patients at Mettu Karl Comprehensive Specialized Hospital (MKCSH). Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted at MKCSH from 12 February 2020 to 11 August 2020. Treatment outcome was measured in terms of seizure control status and seizure frequency. Accordingly, good treatment outcome was declared if the patients had a 2-year seizure-free status and poor if the patient had episodes of seizure in the last 2 years. The pharmaceutical care network Europe guideline was used to assess the presence of medication-related problems. Multivariable logistic regression was used to analyze the variables by using crude odds ratio (COR) and adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Finally, the predictors of epilepsy treatment outcome were declared if a P-value was ⩽0.05. Results: Over the study period, more than half of the participants (172 (57.7%)) were males. The median age of participants was 29 and majorly distributed to 18–30 classes. More than one-fourth of the patients were suffering from absent seizure 85 (28.5%) and general tonic-clonic seizure 83 (27.9%). The most commonly prescribed medication was Phenobarbitone which accounts 34 (11.41%), whereas Valproic acid 8 (2.68%) was the least prescribed. Overall, less than half 131 (43.96%) of patients developed poor treatment outcomes. The predictors of treatment outcomes were having head the injury (AOR = 5.7; 95% CI: 3.18, 10.31), family history of epilepsy (AOR = 5.6; 95% CI: 3.07, 10.46) and the presence of drug therapy problems (AOR = 5.2; 95% CI: 2.79, 9.69). Conclusion: The magnitude of poor epilepsy treatment outcome was found to be high. The predictors of epilepsy treatment outcome were the history of head injury, family history of epilepsy and drug therapy problems. Therefore, to improve the treatment outcome of epileptic patients, health care providers should pay close attention to the identified factors. Besides this, the clinical pharmacy service should be implemented to minimize any medication-related problems
Objectives: Insufficient nutrition can predisposes women to infection, pregnancy losses, preeclampsia and anaemia as well birth of underweight baby whose survival is threatened. Therefore, this study was aimed to assess pregnant mothers’ nutrition knowledge, attitude, practice and associated factors. Methods: A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted among 378 participants who were selected using a systematic random sampling technique. Quantitative data were collected using a structured and interviewer-administered questionnaire, which consisted of questions on sociodemographic features, obstetrics characteristics and pregnant women’s nutrition knowledge, attitude and practice. Data entry and analysis were done using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences statistical version 23. Binary logistic regression analysis was done to identify associated factors. All variables with p-value of < 0.23 in bivariate analysis were included in multivariate analysis, and finally, statistical significance was declared at p-value < 0.05 with 95% confidence interval. Result: From 378 women participated, a total of 231 (61.1%) respondents were in age range of 25–34 years. About 148 (39.1%) of women were not knowledgeable, 153 (40.5%) had an unfavourable attitude, and 47.7% had poor dietary practice. Knowledge (adjusted odds ratio = 4.5; 95% confidence interval: 2.88, 10.06, p = 0.03), attitude (adjusted odds ratio = 3.6; 95% confidence interval: 2.43, 6.66, p = 0.04) and practice (adjusted odds ratio = 3.6; 95% confidence interval: 2.43, 6.66, p = 0.036) were all significantly associated with maternal education. Regarding their occupation, merchant women were seven times (adjusted odds ratio = 7.02; 95% confidence interval: 2.88, 17.09, p = 0.01) more likely to have knowledge and government employees were six times (adjusted odds ratio = 6.05; 95% confidence interval: 3.58, 13.05, p = 0.04) more likely to be knowable than housewives. Moreover, multiparous women were 4.77 times (adjusted odds ratio = 4.77; 95% confidence interval: 1.15, 8.66, p = 0.002) more likely to be knowledgeable compared to primigravida women. Monthly income was also associated to attitude (adjusted odds ratio = 0.45, 95% confidence interval: 0.10, 1.66, p = 0.03). Women who had a favourable attitude were five times (adjusted odds ratio = 5.25; 95% confidence interval: 2.36, 9.62, p = 0.04) more likely to have good nutritional practices during pregnancy. Conclusion: Pregnant women’s knowledge, attitude and practice towards nutrition in this area were low. The educational status of women was associated with knowledge; attitude and practice. Likewise, occupation and parity were associated with knowledge; and attitude was also found to be a determinant factor of nutritional practice. Therefore, community nutritional education and antenatal nutritional counselling need to be strengthened in the area.
