An unanticipated outcome of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been increased Sinophobia directed toward Asian Americans. The present study used a mixed-methods design and investigated how 345 East Asian Americans responded to COVID-19-related microaggressions and how their responses affected stress and well-being. The qualitative data included 196 narratives describing anti-Asian microaggressions experienced by participants during COVID-19. Four themes emerged from narratives including nonverbal rejection responses, verbal rejection, physical assault, and exposure to aggression on the social media. Additionally, quantitative data collected participants' responses to scales measuring microaggressions, personal resilience, social support, coping strategies (engagement and disengagement coping), stress, and psychological well-being. Path analysis showed that participants who reported more microaggressions experienced significantly more stress. Participants with more social support had better psychological well-being. Those with stronger personal resilience were more likely to use engagement coping. Even though engagement coping was associated with more stress, confronting aggressors was also associated with better psychological well-being compared to ignoring the threat (disengagement coping). Implications of these findings are discussed.What is the public significance of this article? East Asian Americans confronted with anti-Asian microaggressions during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic who engaged with the aggressor had more stress, but better mental health outcomes compared to participants who ignored microaggressions.
Returning to work poses a challenge to new mothers' breastfeeding success during the first 6 months postpartum. While previous research has shown that breastfeeding-related workplace policy plays a significant role in women's decision to continue breastfeeding, the extent to which interpersonal factors such as coworkers' (lack of) support and stigma affect women's breastfeeding behavior is less understood. Through a cross-sectional survey with 500 working mothers, this research found that female coworker support of other women played an important role in affecting mothers' decision to continue breastfeeding after returning to work and contributed to breastfeeding self-efficacy. The findings suggest that mothers' perception of supportive coworker communication has an impact on sustained breastfeeding. Workplaces need to enhance the mother-friendly climate by encouraging and rewarding coworkers and providing support necessary for breastfeeding colleagues.
Studies conclude that breastfeeding for six months is associated with better lifelong health for the mother and the child. Mothers in the U.S. returning to work after maternity leave report difficulty with the need to take frequent breaks to pump breastmilk so many stop breastfeeding. Factors discouraging pumping breastmilk in the workplace motivated a content analysis of public comments posted in response to a legal deposition that occurred in January of 2011 in which an attorney who was a new mother was challenged about taking a break to pump breastmilk. A total of 899 public comments posted on Yahoo in 2015-2016 in response to this earlier incident were analyzed for content. Of these, only 336 mentioned breastfeeding. Overall, 148 comments showed support for breastfeeding or pumping breastmilk at work, while 182 comments showed moderate to strong disapproval (six unclassified). The majority of disapproving comments were critical of pumping breastmilk in the workplace. Implications of these findings for the duration of breastfeeding after returning to work are discussed.
Breastfeeding in public continues to be controversial in the United States and other developed countries such as the United Kingdom and Australia. This study conducted a thematic analysis of online comments posted in response to a news story describing an incident involving public breastfeeding to assess strategies people used to communicate and manage stigma, as well as reasons people use to justify stigma. Stigma was communicated by negative attributions and use of faulty analogies equating breastfeeding with illegal body exposure. A predominant theme characterized the nursing mother as a disrespectful exhibitionist. Other themes included equating breastfeeding with objectification and descriptions of nonverbal disapproval toward breastfeeding in public while downplaying any health benefits of breastfeeding. Attempts to manage stigma in online comments were met with resistance and opposition. Results suggest that in spite of laws protecting public breastfeeding and campaigns promoting breastfeeding, prevalent attitudes continue to stigmatize mothers for breastfeeding in public.
