BackgroundCD73 is one of the critical component in the formation of immunosuppressive microenvironment in cancers. We aimed to provide an overview of the current status of CD73 expression and its relationship with clinicopathlogical features and prognosis in different cancers.MethodsPubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE and Cochrane library were searched to identify the relevant studies. CD73 expression level in distinct cancers and its relationship with clinicopathlogical characteristics and prognosis were investigated using online database. Meta-analyses were conducted using RevMan v5.0 and STATA v12.0.ResultsFourteen publications with 2951 cases were included. The incidence of high CD73 expression was 0.50 (95% CI: 0.36–0.63). Data from Oncomine validated that median CD73 expression level in tumor tissues was markedly higher than that in normal tissues in most kinds of cancers except cecum adenocarcinoma and ovarian cancer (P < 0.05). High CD73 expression was significantly correlated with shorter overall survival (OS) in various cancers (high risk [HR] = 1.48; P < 0.05). Subgroup analysis using online database demonstrated that high CD73 expression was significantly correlated with poor OS in breast (HR = 1.23; P < 0.05) and ovarian cancer (HR = 1.14; P < 0.05), but favorable OS in lung (HR = 0.80; P < 0.05) and gastric cancer (HR = 0.71; P < 0.05). High CD73 expression was dramatically associated with lymph node metastases (OR = 2.61; P = 0.05).ConclusionHigh CD73 expression was significantly associated with lymph node metastases and a promising prognostic factor in different types of cancers.Electronic supplementary materialThe online version of this article (10.1186/s12885-018-4073-7) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.
Background The burden of kidney, bladder, and prostate cancers has changed in recent decades. This study aims to investigate the global and regional burden of, and attributable risk factors for genitourinary cancers during the past 30 years. Methods We extracted data of kidney, bladder, and prostate cancers from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 database, including incidence, mortality, disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), and attributable risk factors from 1990 to 2019. Estimated annual percentage changes (EAPC) were calculated to assess the changes in age-standardized incidence rate, age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR), and age-standardized DALYs rate (ASDR). The associations between cancers burden and socio-demographic index (SDI) were also analyzed. Results Compared with 1990, the global incident cases in 2019 were higher by 154.78%, 123.34%, and 169.11% for kidney, bladder, and prostate cancers, respectively. During the 30-year study period, there was a downward trend in ASMR and ASDR for bladder cancer (EAPC = − 0.68 and − 0.83, respectively) and prostate cancer (EAPC = − 0.75 and − 0.71, respectively), but an upward trend for kidney cancer (EAPC = 0.35 and 0.12, respectively). Regions and countries with higher SDI had higher incidence, mortality, and DALYs for all three types of cancers. The burden of bladder and prostate cancers was mainly distributed among older men, whereas the burden of kidney cancer increased among middle-aged men. Smoking related mortality and DALYs decreased, but high body mass index (BMI) and high fasting plasma glucose (FPG) related mortality and DALYs increased among kidney, bladder, and prostate cancers during the study period. Conclusions Kidney, bladder, and prostate cancers remain major global public health challenges, but with distinct trend for different disease entity across different regions and socioeconomic status. More proactive intervention strategies, at both the administrative and academic levels, based on the dynamic changes, are needed.
HighlightsSerum Hcy was higher in MSA patients when compared to healthy subjects, particularly in male patients.Serum UA was lower in MSA patients when compared healthy subjects, particularly in male patients.Serum Hcy levels were significantly positively correlated with the severity of MSA.The ROC curve for the combination of Hcy and UA showed potential diagnostic value in discriminating MSA from healthy subjects.AimThere is evidence suggesting that inflammatory responses play a critical role in the pathogenesis of multiple system atrophy (MSA). Whether inflammatory mediators can be used as reliable biomarkers to detect the severity and progression of MSA remains largely unknown.MethodsWe performed a cross-sectional study that included 47 patients with MSA and 50 healthy age-matched controls. Serum levels of homocysteine (Hcy), uric acid (UA), and C-reactive protein (CRP) were measured. These levels positively correlated with the severity of MSA, based on both motor and non-motor symptoms. Several scales were used to rate the severity of MSA, including the Unified multiple system atrophy rating scale, Parkinson’s disease sleep scale, Non-motor Symptoms Scale, the Schwab & England activities of daily living scale, Webster Scale, modified Hoehn and Yahr staging scale, and the Mini-Mental State Examination. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves was applied to map the diagnostic accuracy of MSA against healthy subjects.ResultsCompared with healthy subjects, we found that serum Hcy was higher, UA was lower, and CRP levels were unchanged in MSA patients. These findings were especially prominent in male patients. No significant differences of serum Hcy and UA were observed between patients of MSA and PD. Interestingly, there was a significant correlation between Hcy levels and MSA severity such as movement dysfunction, declined cognition, and cardiovascular symptoms. Additionally, the ROC curve for the combination of Hcy and UA (AUC 0.736) showed potential diagnostic value in discriminating MSA from healthy subjects.ConclusionOur findings suggest that the inflammatory mediators Hcy and UA may play important roles in the pathogenesis of MSA. The measurement of serum Hcy and UA levels could then be a useful tool to accurately distinguish MSA from healthy subjects.
