BackgroundOnline interventions providing individual health behavior assessment should deliver feedback in a way that is both understandable and engaging. This study focused on the potential for infographics inspired by the aesthetics of game design to contribute to these goals.ObjectiveWe conducted formative research to test game-inspired infographics against more traditional displays (eg, text-only, column chart) for conveying a behavioral goal and an individual’s behavior relative to the goal. We explored the extent to which the display type would influence levels of engagement and information processing.MethodsBetween-participants experiments compared game-inspired infographics with traditional formats in terms of outcomes related to information processing (eg, comprehension, cognitive load) and engagement (eg, attitudes toward the information, emotional tone). We randomly assigned participants (N=1162) to an experiment in 1 of 6 modules (tobacco use, alcohol use, vegetable consumption, fruit consumption, physical activity, and weight management).ResultsIn the tobacco module, a game-inspired format (scorecard) was compared with text-only; there were no differences in attitudes and emotional tone, but the scorecard outperformed text-only on comprehension (P=.004) and decreased cognitive load (P=.006). For the other behaviors, we tested 2 game-inspired formats (scorecard, progress bar) and a traditional column chart; there were no differences in comprehension, but the progress bar outperformed the other formats on attitudes and emotional tone (P<.001 for all contrasts).ConclusionsAcross modules, a game-inspired infographic showed potential to outperform a traditional format for some study outcomes while not underperforming on other outcomes. Overall, findings support the use of game-inspired infographics in behavioral assessment feedback to enhance comprehension and engagement, which may lead to greater behavior change.
Xanthohumol is a unique prenylated flavonoid in hops (Humulus lupulus L.) and beer. Xanthohumol has been shown to possess a variety of pharmacological activities. There is little research on its effect on doxorubicin-resistant breast cancer cells (MCF-7/ADR) and the cancer stem-like cells exiting in this cell line. In the present study, we investigate the effect of xanthohumol on the viability and stemness of MCF-7/ADR cells. Xanthohumol inhibits viability, induces apoptosis, and arrests the cell cycle of MCF-7/ADR cells in a dose-dependent manner; in addition, xanthohumol sensitizes the inhibition effect of doxorubicin on MCF-7/ADR cells. Interestingly, we also find that xanthohumol can reduce the stemness of MCF-7/ADR cells evidenced by the xanthohumol-induced decrease in the colony formation, the migration, the percentage of side population cells, the sphere formation, and the down-regulation of stemness-related biomarkers. These results demonstrate that xanthohumol is a promising compound targeting the doxorubicin resistant breast cancer cells and regulating their stemness, which, therefore, will be applied as a potential candidate for the development of a doxorubicin-resistant breast cancer agent and combination therapy of breast cancer.
INTRODUCTION Smoking rates remain disproportionately high among Chinese immigrants in the US, particularly in males. Community-based smoking cessation services and quitlines have low engagement rates. Social media and text messaging programs can be effective in promoting quit rates and improving treatment engagement. This study examined Chinese immigrant smokers' barriers to accessing available smoking cessation services and patterns of using social media platforms and mobile phone text messaging. METHODS We conducted in-depth interviews (n=30) and a brief survey (n=49) with adult Chinese immigrant smokers leaving in New York City in 2018. Qualitative interviews explored smokers' challenges with smoking cessation, barriers to accessing and using smoking cessation services, and experience using social media and text messaging. The quantitative survey assessed smoking and quitting behaviors, and social media and text messaging use patterns. RESULTS Qualitative data revealed that participants faced various barriers to accessing cessation services, including the lack of awareness about services, skepticism about treatment effects, reliance on willpower for cessation, and time constraints. WeChat was mainly used to maintain social networking and acquire information. Participants rarely used text messaging or other social media platforms. Quantitative data showed that 55% of participants had no plan to quit smoking. Among those who reported past-year quit attempts (45%), 55% used cessation assistance. WeChat was the most frequently used platform with 94% users. CONCLUSIONS WeChat has potential to serve as an easily accessible platform for delivering smoking cessation treatment among Chinese immigrant populations. Research is warranted to explore the feasibility and efficacy of employing WeChat in smoking cessation treatment.
This study evaluated the training of Chinese American Community Health Workers (CHWs) to implement a small-group mammography video and discussion program as part of a randomized controlled trial that had the goal to increase adherence to mammography screening guidelines among Chinese American women. A total of 26 Chinese American CHWs in the metropolitan Washington DC area, Southern California, and New York City participated in a 4-h training workshop and completed surveys before and after the workshop to assess their knowledge regarding mammography screening guidelines and human subjects protection rules. The results showed significantly increased knowledge of mammography screening guidelines and human subjects protection rules (both p < 0.01) after the training. CHWs were also trained to lead a discussion of the video, including screening benefits and misconceptions. Forty-three audio recordings of discussions led by 13 active CHWs were transcribed and qualitatively analyzed to assess implementation fidelity. Ten out of 13 active CHWs fully addressed about 3 of the 5 benefit items, and 11 out of 13 CHWs fully addressed more than 5 of the 9 misconception items. Chinese CHWs can be trained to implement research-based intervention programs. However, a one-time training resulted in moderate adherence to the discussion protocol. Ongoing or repeat trainings throughout the intervention period may be needed to enhance implementation fidelity.
Background Hypertension control is critical to reducing cardiovascular disease, challenging to achieve, and exacerbated by socioeconomic inequities. Few states have established statewide quality improvement (QI) infrastructures to improve blood pressure (BP) control across economically disadvantaged populations. In this study, we aimed to improve BP control by 15% for all Medicaid recipients and by 20% for non-Hispanic Black participants. Methodology This QI study used repeated cross-sections of electronic health record data and, for Medicaid enrollees, linked Medicaid claims data for 17,672 adults with hypertension seen at one of eight high-volume Medicaid primary care practices in Ohio from 2017 to 2019. Evidence-based strategies included (1) accurate BP measurement; (2) timely follow-up; (3) outreach; (4) a standardized treatment algorithm; and (5) effective communication. Payers focused on a 90-day supply (vs. 30-day) of BP medications, home BP monitor access, and outreach. Implementation efforts included an in-person kick-off followed by monthly QI coaching and monthly webinars. Weighted generalized estimating equations were used to estimate the baseline, one-year, and two-year implementation change in the proportion of visits with BP control (<140/90 mm Hg) stratified by race/ethnicity. Results For all practices, the percentage of participants with controlled BP increased from 52% in 2017 to 60% in 2019. Among non-Hispanic Whites, the odds of achieving BP control in year one and year two were 1.24 times (95% confidence interval: 1.14, 1.34) and 1.50 times (1.38, 1.63) higher relative to baseline, respectively. Among non-Hispanic Blacks, the odds for years one and two were 1.18 times (1.10, 1.27) and 1.34 times (1.24, 1.45) higher relative to baseline, respectively. Conclusions A hypertension QI project as part of establishing a statewide QI infrastructure improved BP control in practices with a high volume of disadvantaged patients. Future efforts should investigate ways to reduce inequities in BP control and further explore factors associated with greater BP improvements and sustainability.
