Photoconductivity and optical absorption measurements were employed to analyze deep levels in undoped n-type GaN films grown on sapphire substrate by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. At room temperature, the photoconductivity measurement exhibits a broad level at around 1.90 eV. Similarly, the optical absorption spectrum shows a deep level located at 1.87 eV within the band gap, which is best described by a transition from a donor charge-transfer level to the conduction band, according to Lucovsky theory. A persistent photoconductivity whose behavior is distinctive from that of previously reported work for n- or p-type GaN epitaxial films was observed. The photocurrent quenching and decreased dark current in the persistent photoconductivity effect suggest that metastable electron states are formed in the band gap to trap electrons which tunnel out the potential barrier with long recovery time.
Anastatus orientalis, native to northern China, is an egg parasitoid wasp of the spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) and is being tested as a potential biological control agent for invasive L. delicatula in the United States. As a component of these evaluations, live A. orientalis collected from Beijing and Yantai in China were reared in containment in the U.S. These specimens showed different responses in diapause behaviors to rearing conditions used previously by other researchers. To understand the primary mechanism potentially driving discrepancies in important life history traits, we used molecular tools to examine the genetic composition of A. orientalis from China and from South Korea, where the parasitoid has been introduced to aid in the population management of invasive L. delicatula. Molecular analysis of mitochondrial DNA recovered six haplotype groups, which exhibit biased frequency of abundance between collection sites. Some haplotypes are widespread, and others only occur in certain locations. No apparent pattern is observed between wasps collected from different years or emergence seasons. Uncorrected genetic distances between haplotype groups range from 0.44% to 1.44% after controlling for within-group variation. Genetic variance of A. orientalis is characterized by high levels of local diversity that contrasts with a lack of a broad-scale population structure. The introduced Korean population exhibits lower genetic diversity compared to native populations. Additionally, we created iso-female lines for major haplotype groups through laboratory rearing. Differences in diapause behavior were correlated with mitochondrial haplotype. Our results indicate that the observed life history traits in A. orientalis have a genetic base.
Effects of temperature and salinity on the growth of the two agarophytes, Gracilaria verrucosa (Hudson) Papenfuss and Gracilaria chorda Holmes were examined in Korea. Both species grew over a wide range of temperatures (10-30 • C) and salinities (5-35‰), and grew well at 17-30 • C and a salinity of 15-30‰. In culture, G. verrucosa grew faster than G. chorda and their maximum growth rates were 4.95% day −1 (30 • C, 25‰) and 4.47% day −1 (at 25 • C, 25‰), respectively. In the field population the maximum growth and fertility of G. chorda were observed in summer. The growth rate of G. verrucosa was slightly higher than that of G. chorda for 2 weeks on the cultivation rope and in culture but it was much lower after being contaminated with epiphytes. The biomass of the epiphytes was 0.82 g dry wt. per host plant in G. verrucosa and 0.001 g in G. chorda. G. chorda exhibited resistance to epiphytism and grew 7 times in length and the dry weight increased 15 times after 55 days. In conclusion, G. chorda appears to be a good agarophyte with a fast growth rate and resistance to epiphytism, and compared with G. verrucosa, has good potential for commercial cultivation.
