A new direct patenting method by which the hot rolled wire rod is coiled in aqueou s solution bath held at its boiling temperature has been developed. The /nin cip le oj this method originated from the Jact that the cooling rate oj wire rod during the film boiling stage when quenched in hot water is com/lamble 10 that oj convenlional /lalenting. T he major Jeatures are as Jollows : (1) The apparatus is so compact as i l Clln be set up in an existing rod rolling mill without any trouble. (2) The o/leration is vel)' simple and the running cost is extremely low. (3) The cooling abiliry is so high as the tensile strength level oj IJrocessed wire rod is between that oj the lead patenting and air palenting level and IQl:~er diameter rod up to J 4 mm is available. (4) Th e variation in the mechanical properties is sufficient!;, small so th at the rod can be used (except high grade aNlication) Jor general pu rposes.
