In this paper, attention has been paid to the study of the psychological experiences associated with the future of the patrol police in Ukraine, a significant percentage of whom had no prior experience in law enforcement activities. The purpose of the research is to study the different types of behaviour in the professional environment and identify the experiences associated with the work of the police both at the initial professional training stage (students) and following two years of work (patrol police officers). As a psychodiagnostic tool, the "Occupational Stress and Coping Inventory" was used. The research involved a total of 604 police officers, consisting of 354 people in the first group at the initial professional training stage (students), and 250 people in the second group following two years of work experience (police officers). The results of the study suggest differences in the indicators related to the experience of future police patrol officers and those already working. We have identified dominant spheres of personality and types of behaviour of police officers. The results obtained update the development of pedagogical technologies in order to optimize the development of the professional identity of the police officers at each of the stages of their professionalization.
In this paper, attention has been paid to the study of the individual psychological and criminological features of acquisitive and violent criminals. The purpose of the research is to find out the peculiarities of unconscious aggression of nonchronic, chronic and extreme-chronic acquisitive and violent criminals. The non-chronic type included twice sentenced criminals; the chronic type -criminals who had served their prison term 3-5 times; extreme-chronic type -those who had 6 or more convictions. The research tool used was the test "Hands" by Wagner, designed to diagnose the indicators of personality aggression. The study sample included male acquisitive and violent criminals with a total of 294 people who were sentenced to imprisonment for unlawful acts. The participants of the study were divided into groups of corresponding criminal orientation and a certain type of crime reproducibility. The group of acquisitive criminals comprised 143 people, 29 of them were non-chronic, 86 -chronic, 28extreme-chronic. The group of violent criminals included 151 people, 29 of who were non-chronic, 93 -chronic, 29extreme-chronic. The results of the study indicated a combination of aggressive and directive indicators of the identity of criminals that proved an increased probability of aggressive behavior, the lack of desire to take into account the opinion, feelings, rights, and intentions of others. The indicators obtained can promote the development of effective methods of rehabilitating those who serve the prison term for acquisitive and violent crimes.
The research found that decision making within the professional activities of the police is the key to their success, an indicator of the effectiveness of their duties performance. It is appealed that decision making in critical situations requires a high level of individual’s self-fulfilment, which reduces stress and encourages police officers to solve the problem. The aim of the article is to identify and substantiate the relationship of personal characteristics with decision making factors in police officers with different levels of professional self-fulfilment. The sample of the empirical research consisted of 84 employees of special purpose police units. The groups of police officers with different levels of professional self-fulfilment were formed using the questionnaire of “Type and Level of Professional Self-Fulfilment”. The research involved the usage of psychodiagnostic techniques, including: the Melbourne Decision Making Questionnaire, the Personal Decision Making Factors Questionnaire and the Big Five Personality Questionnaire. The results of the research showed that the behaviour of police officers with a high level of professional self-fulfilment is characterized by prosociality and responsibility due to the peculiarities of decisions they do not postpone them and do not lose valuable time, considering all possible alternatives. This characterizes them as capable to take risk if the situation requires it. On the other hand, police officers with a low level of professional self-fulfilment tend to shift the problem to other people, they often demonstrate independent behaviour and take responsibility for decision making, but this is accompanied by doubts and fears about their rationality.
The psychological analysis of the concept of "sociability" in the field of legal psychology is revealed, which is defined by researchers as a conscious act in communication, aimed at establishing friendly and trusting relationships. The purpose of the article is an empirical study of the psychological structure of the sociability of patrol police officers with different levels of communicative control. The study involved M. Snyder's "Diagnostic Methodology for Assessing Self-Control in Communication", with the help of which we divided the subjects into two groups: with low and high levels of communicative control. The first group consisted of subjects with a low level of communicative control in the number of 14 people, the second group included students with a high level of communicative control in the number of 25 people. 7 respondents with an average level were excluded from further research. O. Krupnov's "Test of judgments of the personality sociability studying" was used to diagnose the main components of sociability. For mathematical and statistical processing, cluster analysis using the k – means method was used. Quantitative processing of the results was carried out using Student's t-test. The obtained facts show that the police officers of the first group have some difficulties in the implementation of friendly behavior, and the police officers of the second group have the sociability formed as a major component of their professional activities. That is, police officers with a low level of communicative control have a better ability to have a casual and easy conversation. The first group needs a boost to be sociable, as they will prefer solitude rather than a forced conversation with a friend. Police officers with a high level of communicative control enjoy the communication process, often take the initiative, know how to build relationships and control themselves well in difficult and problematic communication conditions. The manifestation of sociability in this group of police officers is due to the need to meet the requirements of the profession and be as effective as possible in society.
Professional work of police officers focuses on a variety of tasks, including patrolling the city and expediting on-call challenges, reaction to traffic violations, prevention of offenses, their detection and response to them, etc. Permanent interaction with the population in the course of performing professional duties requires the police to develop a certain level of communication skills. Interaction with representatives of different layers of society can often be accompanied by conflicts and manipulations in communication. Police officers point to insufficient formation of their communicative competencies, as well as to their professional vulnerability in performing tasks in certain situations of interpersonal interaction. The objective of the paper is to empirically study the features of social intelligence for future police officers with different levels of communicative tolerance. The authors used the questionnaire "General communicative tolerance" (V. Boiko) and the "Social intelligence" test (G. Gilford in the adaptation of O. Mikhailova) as a psycho-diagnostic tool. The sample consisted of 132 trainees from the institute of postgraduate education of Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs. It is theoretically justified that communication in the professional activity of a police officer plays an important role, communicative tolerance is a necessary internal regulator of communication and behaviour within the police activity, and social intelligence in the professional activity of a police officer is a kind of psychological resource for professional development and self-development in the context of his communicative competence. It is noted that the professional activity of a police officer should be regulated not only exclusively by professional standards, standards of conduct contained in laws, orders and instructions, but also by ethical norms, customs and traditions, public opinion and social expectations in society, in turn, it requires a special professionally oriented social intelligence of the future police officers. The authors have empirically established differences in the manifestations of social intelligence among trainees with different levels of communicative tolerance, which is to determine the deficiency of ability to predict the consequences of the behaviour of other people, to understand the logic of development of interaction situations and the ability to highlight key features in a variety of human non-verbal responses in subjects with low levels. The obtained results actualize the need to develop and implement practical recommendations on the formation of communicative competence among future police officers at the stage of their professional training.
