Biodiesel is synthesized via the transesterification of lipid feedstocks with low molecular weight alcohols. Currently, alkaline bases are used to catalyze the reaction. These catalysts require anhydrous conditions and feedstocks with low levels of free fatty acids (FFAs). Inexpensive feedstocks containing high levels of FFAs cannot be directly used with the base catalysts currently employed. Strong liquid acid catalysts are less sensitive to FFAs and can simultaneously conduct esterification and transesterification. However, they are slower and necessitate higher reaction temperatures. Nonetheless, acid-catalyzed processes could produce biodiesel from low-cost feedstocks, lowering production costs. Better yet, if solid acid catalysts could replace liquid acids, the corrosion and environmental problems associated with them could be avoided and product purification protocols reduced, significantly simplifying biodiesel production and reducing cost. This article reviews some of the research related to biodiesel production using acid catalysts, including solid acids.
Lifestyle intervention and metformin alone and in combination demonstrated efficacy for antipsychotic-induced weight gain. Lifestyle intervention plus metformin showed the best effect on weight loss. BackgroundRecent studies suggest that internet addiction disorder (IAD) is associated with structural abnormalities in brain gray matter. However, few studies have investigated the effects of internet addiction on the microstructural integrity of major neuronal fiber pathways, and almost no studies have assessed the microstructural changes with the duration of internet addiction.Methodology/Principal FindingsWe investigated the morphology of the brain in adolescents with IAD (N = 18) using an optimized voxel-based morphometry (VBM) technique, and studied the white matter fractional anisotropy (FA) changes using the diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) method, linking these brain structural measures to the duration of IAD. We provided evidences demonstrating the multiple structural changes of the brain in IAD subjects. VBM results indicated the decreased gray matter volume in the bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), the supplementary motor area (SMA), the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), the cerebellum and the left rostral ACC (rACC). DTI analysis revealed the enhanced FA value of the left posterior limb of the internal capsule (PLIC) and reduced FA value in the white matter within the right parahippocampal gyrus (PHG). Gray matter volumes of the DLPFC, rACC, SMA, and white matter FA changes of the PLIC were significantly correlated with the duration of internet addiction in the adolescents with IAD.ConclusionsOur results suggested that long-term internet addiction would result in brain structural alterations, which probably contributed to chronic dysfunction in subjects with IAD. The current study may shed further light on the potential brain effects of IAD.
After eating, the human brain senses a biochemical change and then signals satiation, but precisely when this occurs is unknown. Even for well-established physiological systems like glucose-insulin regulation, the timing of interaction between hormonal processes and neural events is inferred mostly from blood sampling. Recently, neuroimaging studies have provided in vivo information about the neuroanatomical correlates of the regulation of energy intake. Temporal orchestration of such systems, however, is crucial to the integration of neuronal and hormonal signals that control eating behaviour. The challenge of this functional magnetic resonance imaging study is to map not only where but also when the brain will respond after food ingestion. Here we use a temporal clustering analysis technique to demonstrate that eating-related neural activity peaks at two different times with distinct localization. Importantly, the differentiated responses are interacting with an internal signal, the plasma insulin. These results support the concept of temporal parcellation of brain activity, which reflects the different natures of stimuli and responses. Moreover, this study provides a neuroimaging basis for detecting dynamic processes without prior knowledge of their timing, such as the acute effects of medication and nutrition in the brain.
The hypothalamus plays a central role in the regulation of energy intake and feeding behavior. However, the presence of a functional abnormality in the hypothalamus in humans that may be related to excess energy intake and obesity has yet to be demonstrated in vivo. We, therefore, used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to monitor hypothalamic function after oral glucose intake. The 10 obese (34 +/- 2 years of age, BMI 34.2 +/- 1.3 kg/m2) and 10 lean (32 +/- 4 years of age, BMI 22.0 +/- 0.9 kg/m2) subjects with normal glucose tolerance ingested 75 g of glucose while a midsagittal slice through the hypothalamus was continuously imaged for 50 min using a conventional T2*-weighted gradient-echo pulse sequence. After glucose ingestion, lean subjects demonstrated an inhibition of the fMRI signal in the areas corresponding to the paraventricular and ventromedial nuclei. In obese subjects, this inhibitory response was markedly attenuated (4.8 +/- 1.3 vs. 7.0 +/- 0.6% inhibition, P < 0.05) and delayed (9.4 +/- 0.5 vs. 6.4 +/- 0.5 min, P < 0.05) compared with that observed in lean subjects. The time taken to reach the maximum inhibitory response correlated with the fasting plasma glucose (r = 0.75, P < 0.001) and insulin (r = 0.47, P < 0.05) concentrations in both lean and obese subjects. These results demonstrate in vivo, for the first time, the existence of differential hypothalamic function in lean and obese humans that may be secondary to obesity.
