This study aims to analyse the extent andragogy serves as a means to secure quality in adult education programs. It attempts to scrutinize how active learning methods are implemented effectively in adult education program in the Eastern part of Ethiopia. A survey research design was adapted as a method of the study. Stratified and purposive sampling techniques were employed to select respondents (515 male and 285 female adult learners and 30 facilitators).Questionnaire and interview was used to gather pertinent information about the adult education program. Descriptive statistics and one way ANOVA were used as a means for data analysis. The findings show that active learning methods employed by facilitators were not satisfactorily implemented. The least rated active learning methods employed by facilitators were role play and project methods. And, the most highly used and rated active learning method was collaborative learning. There was a significance mean difference between first and second year adult education followers (in favour of second year learners) in experiencing active learning.
The purpose of this study was to examine the existing practices and challenges of Integrated Functional Adult Literacy Program in eastern Ethiopia. To achieve this objective, the researchers used mixed research design. Questionnaires, interview and focus group discussions were used as viable instrument for data collection. The questionnaires were filed by 302 adult learners and 153 facilitators. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed that since the introduction of adult education programs with an integrated manner, harmful traditional practices are reduced, community participation in environmental conservation are growing; societal life skills and usage of new agricultural technologies are improved. However, dysfunctional management structure, poor institutionalization, integration and coordination among the sectors, lack of financial package, trained personnel and low and inconsistent salary were the major bottlenecks in the implementation of the program. Therefore, collaborative efforts among government, NGOs and the community need to put in place to alleviate both human and non-human related problems for the effective realization of the program with pioneering structure, financing,organization and management to achieve transformational and sustainable development goals.
All endeavors were devoted to investigate the views and feelings of stakeholders on the implementation of teachers' professional development and its contribution to sustain academic programs quality at Adama University. A case study that constitutes qualitative and quantitative method was employed. In an attempt to achieve the objectives of the study, evidences were collected from students, staff members, professional development program coordinators, and management bodies. The data-collecting instruments for obtaining relevant information were questionnaires, interview, observation, and document analysis. The finding in relation to this study uncovers the fact that though continuous professional development has been perceived as the most useful avenue of teachers continuous and lifelong learning, for the most part, it is relegated to adhoc committees or interested group or institutional units in the system of university education/training. Moreover, the absence of PDP in the university organizational structure, clear mission and vision, defined and well-articulated policy, strategic plan, representatives in university senate meetings, adequate resources, well-identified and -preserved training facilities, and unit library were circumstances that in one way or another negatively affected the provision of effective professional development programs/trainings that may have adverse effect in the deliberation of quality education/training in Adama University.
The study explores students’ perceptions in open and distance education at Haramaya University. A total of 120 students (90 male and 30 female) represent the study sample. Data were collected from the audience through a questionnaire which consisted of open ended items with a reliability of a equal to 0.96. The collected data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA (One-way &Two-way) and the Pearson Product Moment Correlation(r). The results disclosed a considerable proportion of students’ have the perceptions that the quality of distance education system in general and the distance teacher training program in particular ranges from moderate to poor. Female learners’ demonstrate lower perceptions of the quality of the program while their male counterpart demonstrates high quality perceptions. There is a positive correlation between academic score and perceptions score. Married learners show a lower level of academic achievement compared to those who are unmarried. The natural science students have better academic performance and higher perceptions scores than social science and language students. And, high achievers show significant higher perceptions than the low and average achievers. In addition, diploma students demonstrate higher perceptions scores than the BA/BSC or certificate students with regards to the ODL system of education.
