The research is aimed to assist and facilitate the students of Electrical and Electronics Department of Politeknik Negeri Jakarta (State Polytechnics of Jakarta), Indonesia, in learning technical English vocabulary. As technical students, they study ESP (English for Specific Purposes) and they find some obstacles in memorizing technical vocabularies which are very important in order to read and understand manual books for laboratory and workshop. Some English technical vocabularies among others are “generate”, “pile”, “bench”, et cetera. The research outcome is software which will be beneficial for technical students, especially electrical and electronics students. This software can be used to practice their vocabulary skills, so they will be more skillful and knowledgeable. This software is designed by using the program of Rapid E-Learning Suite Version 5.2 and Flash CS3. The software practice contains some exercises on reading text and reading comprehension questions and presented with the multiple answers. This software is handy and flexible because students can bring it anywhere and be studied anytime. It is handy because this software is put and saved in CD (compact disc), so the students can take it with them anywhere and anytime they want to learn. In other words, they have flexibility to learn and practice English Technical Vocabularies. As a result, the students are found one of the ways to overcome their problems of memorizing vocabularies. The product is a kind of software which is easily used and portable so that the students can use the software anywhere and anytime. It consists of 3 (three) sections of exercises. At the end of each exercise, the students are evaluated automatically by looking at the scoring system. These will encourage them to get good score by repeating it again and again. So the technical words are not problem for them. Furthermore, the students can practice technical English vocabulary both at home and in the language laboratory by using this software. Nowadays, English teachers must be creative to engage students to be more active and critical. Along with technology development, teachers are at ease with their jobs. This mini research aims to make a teaching-learning model of English subject for Specific Purposes (ESP) based on a project (PjBL) for being used in some departments of engineering at Politeknik Negeri Jakarta (PNJ), namely: Civil Engineering Department, Electrical and Electronic Department, IT Engineering Department and Mechanical Department. Such a model has not been made yet before. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. The data was taken from the questionnaires and interviews. The data was analyzed and the design of PjBL and a job sheet as well were made. The outcome of this research is a kind of teaching-learning model design which will hopefully be going be used as a standard for English teachers of engineering for ESP teachers at Politeknik Negeri Jakarta.
The main purpose of the academic writing is to inform other researchers about writers’ findings in certain research. In this case, writer will propose claims. For non-native English speaker like Indonesian, this is the tough work to do. L2 learners find difficulty to write for academic purposes or make claims. One of the strategies that L2 learners do is by using hedging devices. Hedges are used to present findings cautiously with leaving room for readers to have their own interpretation. This argument is also supported by Ken Hyland (1996) stated that academic writing is full of hedges. This study aims to find the hedges in academic writing used by Indonesian researchers or writers. According to Levinson (1987) with his theory of FTA (Face Treathening Act), those words mostly function as a tool for speakers or writers to make them comfortable and save negative face. It means that the writers should choose the correct words to achieve the communicative goal. The data is taken from 10 dissertations written in English. The method used is decriptive-qualitative analysis. The study focuses on 2 kinds of hedging strategies proposed by Hyland (1996). They are writer-oriented hedges and reader-oriented hedges. The first strategy consists of (1) passive voice, (2) dummy subjects, and (3) abstract rhetors. The latter consists of (1) personal attribution and (2) conditionals. The results reveal that writer-oriented hedges are the most frequent hedging device utilized by Indonesian researchers, such as: passive construction and dummy subjects. The conclusion of this study is that the use of passive constructions and modality (can, may, might, should) are highly desireable by Indonesian researchers. It means that Indonesians like to let the data talk by themselves in order to avoid a potential conflict and hence to maintain the harmony between writers and readers.
In this 21st century era, English teachers must have good knowledge of English as well as the skills of using various technology in order to make their teaching-learning process go smoothly. Nowadays, technology is like the primary need in every sector, especially in education sector. English lecturers should be able to adapt with the changes of teaching environment since the use of computers, laptops and other tools are becoming the big necessity in our daily life. There are three things that must be considered; technology, pedagogy and content knowledge. By understanding them, the teaching-learning process will become perfect. This article aims to find the perceptions of TPACK how it helps English lecturers achieve their goals. The data were taken from 3 English language lecturers of three different departments as the respondents. This mini research used descriptive quantitative in which the data were collected through observation and were analysed with data reduction, interpretation, and description. The findings shows that the score for content knowledge (CK) for all teachers ranges 78%-80 %, pedagogical knowledge (PK) ranges 55%-65%, technological knowledge (TK) ranges 60%-75%. Meanwhile score for Technological Content Knowledge (TCK) ranges 77%-82%, Technological Pedagogical Knowledge ranges (TPK) 60%-67%, TPACK 72%-75%. These imply that lecturers of polytechnics are good and skilful to integrate the technology with pedagogic and content knowledge.
