While clearly still in the minority, a growing number of rare map libraries are actively exploring opportunities to introduce the K-12 educational community to their collections. The challenge is how to connect these disparate organizations in a meaningful way which takes both the teachers' and students' needs into account, while safeguarding the rare materials. This paper offers a brief summary of the current state of K-12 outreach in special collections and describes how educational outreach programs for elementary and middle school students were developed and promoted at the Osher Map Library and Smith Center for Cartographic Education, a rare map library at the University of Southern Maine.
