The cotton contains various impurities such as protein, wax, pectins, coloring matter, even though cotton has been a major source of pure cellulose. The purification processes have been commonly applied to obtain the pure cellulose. However the excessive purification treatments could lead to the damage in the cellulose structure which could result in the degradation of cellulose and the limited application of cotton cellulose. In this study, the changes in cellulose structural properties such as crystallinity and DP(degree of polymerization) by the various conditions of the purification processes were investigated. The less toxic agents such as hydrogen peroxide and sodium silicate were applied for the purification treatment in this study. The increase in the process times, the temperature and the applied amount of chemical agents resulted in the more purified cellulose. The DP of cotton cellulose was increased at the first weak conditions by the reduction of small molecules such as pectin, wax, and so on. Especially the 2 % addition amount of H 2 O 2 with Na 2 SiO 3 resulted in the higher value in the DP and the brightness compared to the 1.5 % addition amount of H 2 O 2 . However, the 4 % addition amount of H 2 O 2 with Na 2 SiO 3 showed the decreased value because of excessive treatment. In case of the changes in the crystallinity (Gjk), the highest value of the crystallinity was obtained by the 2% addition amount of H 2 O 2 on the cotton cellulose, which showed similar with the change in the DP.
In this study, chemical and physical changes of dissolving pulps which have similar viscosity by dry milling and fractionation were investigated. We used two types of dissolving pulp made from wood and cotton linter fiber, respectively. Dry milling was executed by knife cutter and pulp powders were fractionated by sieve shaker into 4 grades. We analyzed fiber properties, crystallinity index, viscosity, molecular weight of pulp sheet and powders.It was found that poly-dispersity index of cotton linter pulp was smaller than that of wood pulp, meaning that cotton pulp has more narrow molecular weight distribution. It was assumed that these were related to exposure times to chemical treatment which cut cellulose chains not evenly. At least 4 times of chemical treatments for wood pulp were executed and only two times of chemical treatments for cotton linter pulp were done. After dry milling average molecular weight and crystallinity index of cotton linter pulp powders were reduced and these were related to fines content and shape of pulp powders.
The material used is a commercial magnesium based alloy AZ31(Mg-3Al-1Zn) sheet with a thickness of 0.8 mm. Friction tests at various temperatures(R.T. to 200℃) and at various holding forces in the 4 type molds were carried out to investigate the coefficient of friction. A warm drawing process with a local heating and cooling technique was developed in the Mg alloy sheet forming to improve formability because it is very difficult for Mg alloy to deform at room temperature by the conventional method. So, the coefficient of friction at various mold surface treatment conditions in this study was needed to develop the Mg alloy sheet forming technology.
