There have been many studies on neural headline generation models trained with a lot of (article, headline) pairs. However, there are few situations for putting such models into practical use in the real world since news articles typically already have corresponding headlines. In this paper, we describe a practical use case of neural headline generation in a news aggregator, where dozens of professional editors constantly select important news articles and manually create their headlines, which are much shorter than the original headlines. Specifically, we show how to deploy our model to an editing support tool and report the results of comparing the behavior of the editors before and after the release.
Ranking the user comments posted on a news article is important for online news services because comment visibility directly affects the user experience. Research on ranking comments with different metrics to measure the comment quality has shown "constructiveness" used in argument analysis is promising from a practical standpoint. In this paper, we report a case study in which this constructiveness is examined in the real world. Crowd analysis using cameras has attracted much attention for public safety and marketing. Among techniques of the crowd analysis, we focus on spatial people density estimation which estimates the number of people for each small area in a floor region. However, spatial people density cannot be estimated accurately for an area far from the camera because of the occlusion by people in a closer area. Therefore, we propose a method using a memory based regression method with images captured from cameras from multiple viewpoints. This method is realized by looking up a table that consists of correspondences between people density maps and crowd appearances. Since the crowd appearances include situations where various occlusions occur, an estimation robust to occlusion should be realized. In an experiment, we examined the effectiveness of the proposed method.
