Introduction: Stress and anxiety go hand in hand and are common in the lives of every student these days. Dentistry being a professional course is very demanding and aims at bringing out the best in a student in clinical practice. Extraction is a very common but much feared procedure by both patients as well as dentists, especially those who are new to clinics. In our study we aim to find the anxiety levels in dental students towards the procedure of extraction. Materials and Methods: A self prepared questionnaire was circulated to 100 dental students and the responses were collected and statistically analysed. The statistical software used was SPSS version 23. The results were graphed for easy visualisation. Results and Discussion: It was found that females had higher anxiety levels towards extraction than males. Also BDS students had the highest anxiety levels followed by MDS students. PhD students were not found to have much anxiety towards extraction. Conclusion: In this study, anxiety levels towards extraction were found to be high among dental students. As the students gain experience, anxiety levels also decrease. Newcomers to the clinic face the highest anxiety levels.
Addition silicone is a newer type of silicone impression material which has high dimensional stability, accuracy, and flexibility. They are mostly used for fixed restorations such as crowns and bridges. They have high tear strength; however, this strength may be altered upon disinfection. Disinfection of addition silicone prior use is important to reduce the microbial load. The aim of this study is to check whether there is any change in tear strength of addition silicone on disinfection with two commercially available disinfectants. Zhermack Elite HD + Putty material was tested in this study. Base and catalyst material was mixed and the material was cut into strips of dimension 70 mm × 10 mm × 2 mm. Five strips were immersed in sterillium and five strips were immersed in glutaraldehyde solution. These strips were then tested for their tear strength using Instron E3000 Universal Testing Machine. The values obtained were recorded in SPSS software version 22 (IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 23.0. Armonk, NY: IBM Corp.) for analysis and the P was obtained. The mean tear strength of Group 1, addition silicone immersed in sterillium disinfecting solution was found to be 7.148 ± 2.654 kN/m. The mean tear strength of Group 2, addition silicone immersed in glutaraldehyde disinfectant solution was found to be 7.326 ± 4.062 kN/m. An unpaired Student's t-test was done and P was found to be 0.235. The tear strength values between the groups was statistically not significant. Hence the tear strength of addition silicone was found to be greater in the glutaraldehyde disinfectant solution group.
Sleep is very important for the normal functioning of any individual. However, with all the responsibilities we face as students, practitioners, academicians and family members, getting the recommended amount of sleep can be very hard. Insufficient sleep can severely impact the health and well being of an individual and bring down their potential to do work. This has negative effects on both individual and societal levels bringing down the quality as well as life span of useful human resources. The aim of this study is to determine the quality of sleep among dental students in South India.A survey was initiated for a randomly chosen dental student population of 100. A questionnaire was prepared involving questions assessing the sleep quality and all its various aspects. This questionnaire was then circulated to all the participants via online basis. The results obtained from the survey were compiled and analyzed. It was found that 70% of students had unpredictable sleeping patterns. 50% had disturbed sleep. Only 17% students reported that they felt fresh after receiving the recommended 8 hrs of sleep per day. 95% of students stayed up late at night. Sleep latency was found to be around 10 minutes to 1 hour for 85% students. 26% reported that they suffered from nightmares. 56% woke up at night for even the small sounds. This study concludes that dental students have a poor quality of sleep owing to their busy schedules, vast syllabus and loads of clinical and practical work.
The eyes are the windows to our soul. We have been gifted with the beautiful power of eyesight to see the wonders in front of us. The eyes are the second evolved or developed unique sense organ next to olfaction in animals. For animals, it serves to locate food, and also to spot the approaching predator or prey. Apart from these aspects as far as the humans are concerned, their eyes serve several purposes apart from the said purposes. Eyes are unique and specialized to accommodate both light and dark fields, black/white and colour images, near and far objects etc. Since it is extensively used, it can become less functioning or even worse, depending on several conditions. Sadly, the eyesight problems are very common disorders which affect all age groups. There are many reasons for their occurrence. The purpose of our study is to find out the cause of eyesight problems among the adolescent population. A self-prepared questionnaire comprising ten questions was prepared and circulated among the participants. The results were collected and analyzed. 64% of participants had eyesight problems, while 36% did not have any such problems. 31% had eyesight problems since birth. Upon analyzing the results, it can be said that the prevalence of eyesight problems among adolescents is pretty high, and they are mostly caused due to lifestyle patterns.
Solanum torvum has been used therapeutically for centuries. Pharmacological studies indicate that the stem and root of S.torvum have anti-tumor, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory and other medicinally important effects. It is also used to treat fever, wounds and tooth decay. Gout, a disease resulting from increased uric acid accumulation in joints and muscles and due to increased activities of xanthine oxidase enzyme in nucleotide metabolism. Xanthine oxidase converts xanthine to hypoxanthine and further to uric acid. The present study is focused on evaluating the in vitro xanthine oxidase inhibitory (XOI) activity of S. torum fruit extract and to screen the phytochemical constituent present in it. Ethanolic extract of S.torvum (EST) was prepared and xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity was assessed by using Allopurinol as the standard drug. The phytochemical screening of the extract was also done. The results showed that the fruit extract possessed XOI activity in a concentration dependent manner. Also after phytochemical screening showed that EST is rich in phlobatannins, carbohydrates, flavonoids, terpenoids and alkaloids. Thus the study concluded that S.torvum possessed potent in vitro XOI activity.
